There’s still plenty of innovation to be realized. Just look at Studio Ghibli and tell me they're not pushing the boundaries on creative writing. And it’s not like their stories are anything different from what we’ve seen before (coming of age, anti-industrialism, pro-nature, slice-of-life, etc.), but it’s the way they present their stories and craft their characters that separate them from the herd.
It seems that most modern anime have a somewhat unique premise, but lazily written characters that fall under familiar tropes and offer nothing more than their hackneyed quarks.
