Geass kicks off around episode 5/6. Looking at your list I am sure you would like it. I admit it took a while to get going, to set itself up. But once it has got to its feet, boy.
no no no dont be intimidated by the sheer number of episodes in Monster. each episode is great. the story is amazing, the characters are very real. you'll love every twist and turn. anything less than 70 episodes wouldn't do it justice :)
although i agree the story can slow down sometimes, but it never gets boring.
Hi
i just noticed your topic and wanted to write a response to this statement:
"but when inexperienced anime viewers like myself wish to watch the best anime, these universally positive scores render finding such anime impossible."
You can do what i did when i was getting started with anime. ask the people who are knowledgeable. the recommendation forum is a great place to start. dont worry about the reviews. i generally dont put much weight on reviews when deciding to watch a anime, its because like you said they can be biased.
and about this finding the "best" anime. that is subjective. something can be the best but you may not necessarily like it. take for example Death Note, many consider it to be one of the best anime. most people have very good things to say about it. thats why i decided to watch it and i really didnt like it very much.
and if/when you do decide to ask others, look for which anime comes up the most. I know when i was looking for aniime i would look at what people were recommending to others as well. every time someone was looking for a darker more psychological anime i kept seeing the same 2 anime being recommended by many. "monster" and "neon genesis evangelion" when theres that many people saying good things about these 2 anime, i think that says more then what a review could. so i decided to watch them, and turns out it was worth it. they were some of the best anime i have ever watched.
so yea. in a nutshell, dont put too much weight into reviews and look at what people are recommending in the genre that you like
Oh and sorry if you already knew most of what i said. and sorry for the long post.
bye!
