Throw a bunch of psychotic murderous teenagers together, make them kill each other and then bring them back to life! Confusing eh? Well that Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni!
Higurashi is a psychological horror done right, this anime will scare you, surprise you and make you want to hide under your blanket!
So be prepared! But before you watch it why not sit down and read my review!
Keiichi Maebara is a teenage boy who moves to the quiet village of Hinamizawa, he befriends four girls; Mion Sonozaki (an upperclass man) Rena Ryuuguu (an odd little girl with an obsession for cute things) Satoko Houjou (a loud and
...
menacing tomboy) and Rika Furude (a young quiet girl who is very cute)!
Plot Summary:
Keiichi moves to the small village of Hinamizawa and him and his friends are having fun and living life as normal but everything changes as time counts down to the annual Watanagashi festival (or cotton drifting).
Keiichi is taught of a mysterious string of deaths that occur every year on the cotton drifting festival and realises his friends may not be as nice as they seem...
Characters:
Each character is very interesting and has their own backstory and unique personalities. I couldn't imagine any character with the traits of another! Keiichi as you may know is the main character, Shion and Rena are his best friends and Satoko and Rika are his close friends. Out of all the characters it's Rika which creates the most mystery surrounding her, she is very quiet and cryptic, this makes her much creepier than she probably should be!
Psychological Horror:
There is one thing that Higurashi is good at and that is keeping information from you; greatly adding to the psychological aspect. I wouldn't call this is a spoiler as it IS a horror anime after all but every few episodes nearly every, if not all the characters die but then come back to life in the next episode. This works amazingly well on their side because;
I don't mean to use a cliché but people are often afraid of what they don't understand and who would understand this!?
The horror in this anime is done amazingly well because it is off screen partially which works up your imagination. All the characters die horrific and gruesome deaths (don't worry it's not Elfen Lied gore!).
What really made me enjoy Higurashi is that you never know who to trust! In the first couple of episodes someone who was a victim could become the murderer when they come back to life leading you to have absolutely no idea what's going on or who to trust!
Animation:
The animation in Higurashi is not the best at a low 20fps but they get away with it with subtle tricks in the animation which appear to make the scenes flow faster etc.
Music:
The music track in Higurashi is absolutely amazing, it works to the shows advantage amazingly well. Kawai Kenji's music is just unbelievable the music creates tension, horror, a feeling of unease but at the same time it can be funny, joyful and just down right beautiful.
A couple of my favourite tracks include; Matsuri, Anji, Main Theme and Shoujo. If you haven't already check them out on YouTube!
PROS:
~Very interesting plot order.
~Great horror.
~Beautiful Music.
CONS:
~It can get confusing at times.
~You HAVE to watch the 2nd season Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni Kai to fully understand what's going on.
~The animation can look silly at times.
Overall I give this anime a 10/10 because I think it's just amazing! It is also my favourite anime of all time! (^_^)
