This is a better manga than anime. The anime has pacing issues with all the flashbacks while you can read through those quicker with manga. The art is masterful, the premise is cool. The only thing I don't like about Record of Ragnarok is that it's monthly!

All of the character interpretations are unique enough to warrant interest, while staying true to the mythical figure they represent. The fights themselves can be hit or miss, but when they're good they're great. I absolutely adored Buddha and Jack's fights, which are completely different stylistically but fit their characters perfectly and are entertaining in their own ways. One ...

Kaiji is an extremely solid series, and I wanted to give it a 9 or 10. The thing stopping me from labeling it as a masterpiece is the show's pacing. Out of a total 52 episodes, probably around 20 (possibly even more) play out the tension of a scene to its limit without advancing the plot. The episodes that do advance things can move very quickly, making for an odd mixture of rapidity and sluggishness.
