Mixed Feelings

MAL recommended this series based on my enjoyment of Oregairu. I think there are some elements in which this series definitely played into that mind. I wouldn't call this a romcom by any means, the romance elements are nearly non-existent after a setup. However, the thriller aspects were mildly entertaining at baseline. The twists and shockers throughout the show were enough to keep one on their toes, although could be considered predictable.

The first episode seemed a bit brisk with the relationship building. Or at least, the scenarios in which they got to know one another seemed odd or ever so slightly absurd. That should be ... a rough foreshadowing of the rest of this season. I haven't watched the second season yet and I'm not sure if I will.

I don't quite enjoy how the main characters are defined. The main guy, Ayanokoji, seems intelligent, but his social ineptitude is ambiguous as to whether it's a fault in his emotional awareness or if he's just bad at reading the room, I would assume it's the former. The main girl, Horikita, she comes off as your deep dere type. Her nose is obviously in the clouds and she seems to be a slightly changed, less emotive cut-and-paste of Yukinoshita from Oregairu. This Oregairu parallel also makes sense for the other female main character, Kushida, whose intense desire to be friends with everyone screams Yuigahama. The setup is a love triangle, it's pretty clear. As much as I want the banter between main guy and first main girl to be entertaining, they are both entirely too deadpan to allow for as much as a small blast of air from my nostrils.

This dynamic seems to lighten up after the first episode, with Horikita losing a little bit of that cold shoulder. But the grind remains relatively similar from here. She's the cold one, Kushida is the apparent bubbly one, Ayanokoji is the snake in the grass. Smart and sly, very deceptive and ultimately carefree. There's a lot of potential in the characters, but I feel some elements such as with Kushida's darker side and Horikita's lighter side rarely get enough attention. Ayanokoji is played up a lot, yet while he is brilliant he comes off as terribly aloof too often.

Some of the side characters are just unnecessary. The buff, "handsome" arrogant guy with the blonde hair in Class D just looks like he's been held back 20 years. The group of dudes that get feelings for the main girls in the class, pull some stupid shenanigans and ultimately are the cause of a lot of Class D's troubles don't really provide much in the way of character development for the main cast besides causing conflict that the MCs have to resolve. My favorite side character, just because she seems to have the best heart out of all of them, is Sakura. Her character development feels rather forced at most points unfortunately and it was at this point I determined that character development was by far the weakest element of this series. There is so much untapped potential in these characters, but the scenarios they are placed in don't quite hit the mark.

The premise of the series is interesting, it definitely gives a Prison School vibe with everyone attending at the whims of each others' actions. Being able to use the points for anything you can think of, just like real money and the shadiness possible is quite open-ended. All in all the series has a lot of good things going for it, but there are some blaring gaps in the mediocre execution of this show that really hurt the complete package. I will at least give it credit that the mediocrity is relatively consistent, although there are a couple episodes where I wanted my time back...cough cough...obligatory beach episode #1...

By the end of the series I think I was left with some heavy mixed feelings. The attachment I had to the characters was minimal, the final episode felt like a sprint to a good pause point until next season, and the big finishing note fell completely flat. I had originally felt the season deserved a pretty warm fair score, but after the final arc and reflecting on all of it the best I can do is a solid mediocre. It's a good show, it's a bad show. So much potential, but it felt like it was so far from properly tapped.

I have a single confession to make about this movie. It's too short. I've been watching 12 episode series, 24 episode series, for too long now. I needed more. I'll probably end up reading the manga and really enjoying them.

I'm not sure how they could have adapted it better, but there is so much more I could ask, so much more I know deserves to be explored. The romance of the two main characters seems at least rushed in movie format, but I'm sure that's because there was no slower way to develop that. That's why I give character a seven. I would like to start by being upfront about my feelings on this series. The first six or so episodes are a true slowburn with a lot of important details scattered about, but this information will not be quite as relevant to you as an audience member until you've reached the point in which everything shifts into proper perspective.

There is truly a reason Steins;Gate is so highly rated. The writing is never cheap and every moment of this anime serves a purpose to either address earlier oddities or questions the audience may have had, or to keep in mind for when the big reveal or ...

This was a great anime to watch as a romcom fan. It was light in the sense that you don't have to dig too deep into the characters, but towards the end I found myself wanting that depth as the characters started to reveal more of themselves. I was frustrated with a few things, mainly plot devices and shoehorning situations that didn't need to be. The hypnosis expert that turned into a good friend of the vice-president was kind of strange, but his arc was nice.
