I actually liked parts of how he changed Bokurano in its adaptation (though it got kinda messy in the second half), and the Cat Returns was fun. I want to see him make a comeback and direct a new TV series or movie. He seems like he’d create something interesting.

I wish he would direct more anime.

I watched Bokurano 2 years ago and even without having read it, I thought it was disappointing. I cared less and less as more of the children began to die.
I completed the manga yersterday and it was extraordinary. It was incredible, and so harrowing at the same time, I grew sadder as more children began to die, this story is unhealthy but offers introspection about a lot of things. The last chapter was the acme of pain.
Now, I understand why manga fans are mad at him.
It felt that he didn't understand what Bokurano was about.

When I watched Bokurano, I wasn't aware of the whole manga controversy and thought it was a pretty good series in its own, so I don't really hate the guy for how the anime turned out. That being said, I've yet to read the manga, but I doubt that I'll be hating the anime even after that.

He should've never directed bokurano if he hated it so much. the manga was a masterpiece.

you transformed an unique existentialist story into an average mecha one. thanks a lot.

Still don't understand why he would direct something that he hates. Nothing good would come from that.

Damn real upset to learn about Bokurano. But here's my take: Even if I didn't know about the major story differences then I'd still enjoy the shit out of this adaption even more so. Plus I get an alternate take on this amazing story so now I can go read the manga for the true ending :)
