The Shogakukan Manga Award (小学館漫画賞, Shōgakukan Mangashō) is one of Japan's major manga awards, sponsored by Shogakukan Publishing. It has been awarded annually for serialized manga since 1955 and features candidates from a number of publishers. Each winning work will be honored with a bronze statuette and a prize of 1 million yen (about US$9,000). Special awards are also occasionally given out for outstanding work, lifetime achievement, and so forth.

The Japan Media Arts Festival is an annual festival held since 1997 by Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs. The festival begins with an open competition and culminates with the awarding of several prizes and an exhibition.

No. 105 is Sake no Hosomichi by Roswell Hosoki, which started in 1994 with 52 volumes & 998 chapters in Weekly Manga Goraku.

No. 115 is 4P Tanaka-kun by Taro Nami & Sanbanchi Kawa, which started in 1986 with 51 volumes & 459 chapters in Weekly Shonen Magazine Akita Shoten.

No. 118 is Hocho Mushuku by Yasuyuki Tagawa, which started in 1998 with 50 volumes & 302 chapters in Weekly Manga Goraku Nihon Bungeisha.

No. 142 is Gambling Racer by Makoto Tanaka, which started in 1988 with 46 volumes & 477 chapters in Weekly Morning Kodansha.

Hidden gems and "out of the radar" manga that you probably havent heard of if you are new to the medium. Overlooked manga. Good for the ones who want to get deeper and already tried the classics, or simply want to scratch the bottom of the barrel.

Criteria:

1. Underexposed and/or underrated manga ranked below #2000 in terms of popularity.
2. Only one manga per artist. Authors can be repeated, though.
3. No one-shots.
4. Complete scanlations (english)
5. Award-winning manga included.
6. Manga from the 100 best-selling are not elegible.

Manga included are set in real historical settings & does not include those set in a made up world but may include fictional things in the setting.

Gintama? Ichi the Killer? Gantz? Bleach? GTO? Not today, ma'am

Manga set in the feudal era of Japan or just at the end of it that focus on ninja's and assassins of that era.

Manga included about ninja are similar to those from the real feudal period while some include more exaggerated ninja that display inhuman skills.
The list also includes manga about hired assassins these most often being wandering Ronin from the feudal period.

At least one main female character is physically strong, preferably the protagonist.

Physical strength applies both to hand-to-hand combat and proficiency in wielding weaponry (marksmanship, swordsmanship, archery etc.) as well as ability and talent in a physical sport.

No magical/supernatural power allowed unless it enhances physical strength.

Female characters that possess mental fortitude, don't break under pressure. They must have great resilience in the face of difficult or dangerous situations or even tragedy. They don't have to be super smart or geniuses, mental fortitude/stoicism is what matters. Preferably physical strength isn't their main characteristic but their mental fortitude.
