Acma:Game's basically gambling with high stakes at its core. Think Kaiji or Usugoi. The games are actually quite good, and the game's style reminds me of Kaiji. Deceptively simple games with a lot more dimension than luck when you consider the rules that are attached to the game.
The overarching plot's kind of a snooze, though. Most gambling series just focus on staying alive, getting out of debt, etc, but Acma:Game takes it one step further and has Oda be the CEO of a company, with the stakes of the world's political power at hand. Why such a large scale? It's not like it's very well ... developed. Most of the story is still within the games that he plays. Oda has a set of bodyguards armed with guns, and while they are useful in certain games, their military prowess is useless, as again, supernatural games are infinitely more power than them. Same thing with Gungnir. They "took over Japan," yet they still just make use of hostages to make people obey them, or just use the devil's key to make people obey them. Basically, any character that doesn't participate in the games are just emotional baggage that are made hostage to force the main characters to play the game. Don't get me wrong. Actually, Oda's arc with his company and duty was not bad because there was enough time put into the arc, but most of the worldbuilding and plot outside the games are just rushed, full of plot holes, and completely irrelevant to the grand scheme of things. I mean, Oda's girlfriend? Come on.
Just...keep it simple. The individual games are good, they fun to read about. Most of the plot isn't that great though, and it would have benefited if the plot was simpler. Either change the plot, or make it more believable than just "he took over japan in a day" or "we're going to do a ladder tournament through games to determine who's going to be leading Japan." It all boils down to people playing games with high stakes against each other, so why bother with this ridiculous plot?
