Now , I wanted to make this recommendation to the anime but since that isn ' t possible i ' m going to do it under it this one , I had to read it quickly in order to make it work . Jisatsu circle and serial experiments lain have a similiar vibe , when I was thinking back on my read of jisatsu circle I found myself relating it to SEL . Both of these works contain dark themes , ( spoiler warning for both ) a message from those who have committed suicide ( spoiler over ) a supernatural element , and horror  read more

Despera is the spiritual successor to Serial Experiments Lain

Both are short works by Abe Yoshitoshi, a four chapter dōjin and a one shot respectively, but coming from the same author/artist, you will see standard likenesses amongst his character designs and stories' feels.

Both have psycological elements but The Nightmare of Fabrication is much more thought-provoking and much shorter which doesn't allow for the same array of characters as Doubt.

Both have a very dark and intricate plot. They mess with your mind and offer many interesting ideas. They delve into psychological and philosophical aspects. The plots have multiple interpretations and may take a while to fully understand. The style is extremely surreal, abstract and completely different from anything else. Since you can't recommend an anime for a manga this Lain oneshot is the closest thing to the Lain anime so if you liked the Serial Experiments Lain anime you'll prolly enjoy Njigahara Holograph.
