Both have a similar feel to them: they're quiet and wistful dramatic stories. They're both school shojo, but aren't silly. The arkwork for both is simple and clean, though the styles are distinctly different. Even though they communicate a similar feel, the stories are very different. "Flat" is about a kid making friends with his shy younger cousin. "Akaku Saku Koe" is about a girl who wants to be friends with a boy who works for the police.

Akaku Saku Koe also has a protagonist with some trouble that have been hard on him psychologically just like natsume. The kind of calming style is also used in the story and in the art which makes sense cause it's the same mangaka. Overall, it's also a really touching story that people who read natsume book of friends will also like if they read it I think.

Both stories have main characters who isolate themselves. In Akaku Saku Koe it is do to a special ability, while in Kingyou Sou it is due to a disability. However ,through the persistent care of a kind and open-minded girl, both come to open their hearts to another and then to the world again.

Plots are different, but both have inner sadness, beauty and warmth at the same time. The characters learn to trust, love and depend on each other and grow as the story develops. The pace is similar in these two as well.

Both of these mangas are shoujos that deal with the gravity of possessing psychic powers.

Both mangas are about people with special supernatural abilities that they need to be very careful about controlling so that they do not hurt anyone. As such, they both deal with poignant ethical questions and focus on the need for close positive relationships. Both mangas will also make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
