The concept of Chameleon Jail is quite interesting, and leads to some fairly decent reveals. However, that strength is also the manga's weakness as the build up relies on those final moments, and doesn't do all that much to build the characters in any significant way. The story is not bad, but it's fairly clear that they weren't going to amount to much more than the Working Madonna arc. There isn't enough charm in a character like Jail to keep you wanting more, and he doesn't have those same qualities that a Golgo or Conan might have.

While the art is nothing to complain about, ... and clearly tells the story, it lacks much of Takehiko Inoue's later charm. Other than the few basketball aspects early on, and Kaede Purple which seems to be Inoue's own work, even fans of Inoue would find little here other than a look at his artistic progression/career.
