Kainis no kin no tori is set in England during the 19th century and tells the story of Léa Wedgewood, a young lady with the dream of becoming an author but have faced multiple time during her childhood the reality of the world of literature being dominated by masculinity and with the idea that women are not capable of writing or understanding a complex book. The story quickly starts with her deciding to publish her book under a pen name, and when she is asked to meet her publisher in London, she decides to dress up as a man and go alone to the capital.

The two main themes of the manga are how authors works and mostly, the place of the women in society. Both themes are presented in a simplistic manner, the manga does not go into some deeper aspect of Feminism by example, but it does execute those themes pretty well and manage to be relevant even with its historical setting. During the story, we will encounter multiple characters that are authors and that will all show something different when approaching the way they work or will have different points of view about some aspect of literature like the realism of a story with none of them being presented as wrong. The theme of sexism and feminism is at the center of the story with the story of the main character and her goal. There is also the character of Jared Snow which brings a lot of interesting discussion about those subjects when she appears in the story. Both of those themes are very well executed and manage to make the story very interesting.
It is all supported by a pretty good cast of characters. The main duo, Léa and Myles, are some pretty good main characters. They both have an interesting development and receive a good evolution. My only problem with them is how their relationship evolved during volume 3 and 4 which is not bad but I just didn’t manage to get into it. The rest of the cast is also pretty competent. Most characters receive a bit of development that manage to make them interesting and they all have something to bring on the table about the themes of the manga. My problem with them comes with my main problem with this manga, its final volume and its ending.
The last volume is not bad but it concentrates itself on the point I found to be the least interesting about the manga and the ending felt very unsatisfying. Some points felt very unfinished like the story with Myles and his brother and the overall story felt too much open ended. The last volume didn’t bring me the same interest I had in the other 3 volumes of the manga.
For the visual aspect of the manga. It’s pretty decent. Nothing spectacular but nothing bad. The drawing is simple with not a lot of details but it’s pretty and the design of the characters are nice but some characters do sometimes look too much alike. But overall it’s pleasant to look at it.
In conclusion, I found this manga to be pretty good. The last volume did feel like a let down and it is quite the problem considering that it’s only 4 volume length. But the overall story and its characters are still pretty good and enjoyable and the themes of this manga are well executed and very interesting. I don’t think this is the type of manga I could recommend to anyone, but if you fell interested about what it talks about, I would recommend it.
