No Match for Aoi-kun and Machikado Mazoku are two modern takes on the magical girl genre that both point out common tropes of the genre, but also play some of them affectionately straight—making both a must-read for fellow magical girl otaku. The main character meets a magical girl and the two become friends while helping each other out in their own ways. Both series' art and somewhat slice-of-life structure can surprisingly be quite enjoyable.

No Match for Aoi-kun and The Witch and her First Love are two manga about someone who tries to keep a secret so that they don't get shunned, only for someone they suddenly met to accidentally learn about it from the protagonist. The two then become friends after this person expresses interest instead of disgust for the main character even after knowing their secret. One of these two people also has some kind of magic abilities. Both manga also have nice art.

No Match for Aoi-kun and I Am Here are two manga aimed at girls (Aoi-kun is josei while I Am Here is shoujo) with a main character who is a bit shy about their interests and just kinda keeps to themselves at school. However, after a surprise encounter, the main character starts to get friends and slowly realizes over time how they've begun to open up to others. The art is also just as wholesome as the story for both manga.

No Match for Aoi-kun and Ultra Maniac are two magical girl manga that are fairly modern takes on the genre. The main character was an average person before they met a girl who entrusts them with their secret after a series of events and soon gets caught up in their magical antics. Both can be quite wholesome reads about friendships.
