Another factor that gives this series its charm is how each case is tied to a different gemstone, introducing an informational aspect. The author uses the history and meanings of gemstones to relate to the present problems, explaining it in a way that’s easy and fun for readers to understand. In addition to all this, over time unveiling the mystery of the jeweler himself.
The characters are admirable and reading from Seigi’s perspective can be a treat. To put it simply, Seigi is a fool, but an earnest and good willed one, unwavering in his sense of justice (though that’s what often gets him into trouble). His boss, Richard, is a mysterious and beautiful Englishman, extremely fluent in foreign languages and passionate about his work. Unlike Seigi, who is rash and eager to take action, Richard is careful and rational, guiding Seigi as they work together through various circumstances. The dynamic between these two is entertaining to read, moreover following the development of their relationship.
The side characters are nothing to take lightly either. They all bring something new to the table with their own unique experiences and personalities, keeping the series compelling. The characters all feel very human, portraying the complexities of connection between people in an effective manner.
Personally, I’ve found great enjoyment in reading this novel so far. It can be relaxing and heartwarming at times, but also bittersweet or tense. I don’t believe you need to have a great interest in gemstones to be able to enjoy this story, you may just end each chapter with a greater appreciation for things that seem beautiful or even a different perspective to think about. I’m hesitant to give preliminary ratings, but I find myself anxiously waiting for each translated novel to be released and putting the books down when I start reading them is often hard.
If you’ve arrived here from the anime or manga adaptation and enjoyed the story or felt it was lacking in some category, the novels are truly worth reading in my opinion. There are many small details and descriptions that really give to the richness of the characters and it gives you a greater understanding of Seigi’s personality and thought process (even if you want to smack him sometimes). If novels aren’t your thing, the manga is following the story pretty accurately, so it’s a good option but I'd still give the novels a chance. :)
