Synopsis

Grim reapers strike a balance in the world by upholding that life is built upon someone's death. For this reason, they do not involve themselves with humans any more than necessary. Velius, however, is one who loves and cleaves to his only mortal "son," Ende.

Little Ende knows that Velius is a grim reaper but is unaware of the wicked duties that it entails. Even so, Ende finds solace in his father and will go anywhere as long as they are together. One day at school, Ende is invited by his classmates to join their alliance. However, to become a part of the group, he must share his biggest secret. Soon, Ende's unwavering naivety prompts Velius's forbidden love to do something uncalled for—an act Ende will never notice.

From my perspective, Velius - who couldn't get involved with humans beyond what his job as a shinigami allowed - longed for someone who would make him feel loved, so he could finally end his life cycle after having experienced this feeling (the punishment for a Grim Reaper getting involved with a human is death). This feeling was found when he met Ende, a young boy who had been abandoned and whom he adopted; and from this point on, the story is formed.
