Synopsis

The countess, Musee Schnorr, has died four times, with both time and her life rewinding after each death. After her last death, her fifth life begins anew with the betrayal of her fiance. When pushing away the despair of her many tragic ends, someone she encountered during her fourth life comes to mind. i'm so glad i'm slowly forgetting what happened in this manga — it was a piece of trash and doesn't even deserve to be in my brain. there's better yandere stories to read out there, and i definitely had to turn off my head for this one.

the story literally went somewhere. first chapter started normal with the usual regression etc, but then in less than 10 chapters it gets weird. maybe even 5, i don't remember. one thing could be happening in the manga, and suddenly something else is happening. overall, the plot is all over the place. if you read it in japanese and ...

I have to applaud the extremely violent and gory revenge… but that's about all I can compliment.

This was not a satisfying read, the only circumstances I would recommend it under is if you like gore, can ignore a shit story, and don't mind boring art. And also if you can ignore nothing happening in the first half and everything being haphazardly pushed to the second… It's not the worst pacing I've seen but I definitely didn't like it.

There are some points here that can be accused of plagiarism because they are found in another review here on MAL as I finished the manga and started working on my review (apologies to 3ggz). Nonetheless, I agree with the views succinctly written by the author but I really want my views to be made because wow, this manga was so bad in my eyes.

It's extremely hard to recommend Fifth Life to a reader despite only being four volumes long because there’s far more negatives I could find after reflecting upon it.

Let's start with the positives:
* The art is fine. I'm not much of ... a stickler for the artstyle and quality as long as it does the job done as long it's not distractingly bad because I generally care about the story more.
* There's a good full page stylistic confirmation of a character's punishment being completed that looks like a playing card.

And that's pretty much it, everything else I write after this are mostly negative points:
* The lore/worldbuilding is flimsy. In four volumes, you only get the basics with only the evil dragon cult being the only unique thing that sets the world apart from other stories. There is a school, just like most other stories but it's not fleshed out at all.
* The biggest flaw is Fifth Life's focus on the punishments, and it sure delivers this on a brutal scale. But what's immediately striking by the end of the story is that the punishments are a lot crueler than expected. It's understandable to do it for the cruelties imposed in the current loop, but for the previous loops? I don't think inherited sin from the previous loops have much of a standing for punishment, especially because their actions were pretty much influenced by the villainess (not the MC, but the actual villainess of this story, the saintess) via brainwashing. So it's really her who deserves the cruelest of punishments exacted upon her, but they get their unjust desserts too and only to a minute lesser degree.
* Also, it's also difficult to root for most of their punishments when their backstories aren't fleshed out enough. For example, the knight is the most easy to hate against because of his zealous antagonism towards the MC from the get-go, but he's also brainwashed and he pitiably struggles to fight out of it as the saintess’ powers weaken, but only to be turned into an incubus against his will in the end.
* The son of the prime minister is repugnant enough and unrepentant for his heinous actions that seems to escalate further than assisting the saintess, so he’s justifiably punished in a brutal manner.
* The prince? He’s hostile towards the FMC, but this is normal throughout the other loops. Accusing the FMC of bullying the saintess and annulling their engagement as usual.
* I totally forgot there was a fourth love interest, despite him and the FMC being formerly engaged. It didn't help at all that the love interests were pretty much cast aside once the evil dragon (re)entered the picture until it was their time to be punished.

* The handwavey revelation of the story's world being from an otome game does little to save it. And it's both a random assistant and the Saintess who are the reincarnators, although a twist involving switching souls explains the Saint's abhorrent personality.
* Interestingly, there's a tinge of sympathy when you see the saint's previous life who desperately adored the evil dragon when she played the game, but this only complicates things: should we feel sorry for her because she’s just reenacting the method on how to unlock the evil dragon by doing the four routes? Sure, the finger of blame for the FMC’s demises should be pointed at her, but it feels all predetermined by some cruel higher power. Especially because the loop is a mechanic created by them.
* On a meta level, the true villains are the creators of the otome game and story's world for designing such a cruel mechanic in order to access the evil dragon as a love interest. An even more meta level is accusing the author of the story of being the villain for writing this abnormally cruel piece of work. How on earth does the FMC meet her demise in every route? Aren’t there other fiancées for the love interests?
* Interestingly, their rejection of the god of the story's world by the end of the story can be interpreted as a rejection of the game's creators and even the author of the story, but now I’m just waffling about off a tangent.

* I had a degree of expectation because the FMC seems to break away from the scenario thanks to the evil dragon. I thought it would go into something similar to Final Last Boss where she's living her best life, but it just descends into physical and psychological torture porn.

* Overall it's a hollow read that only redeems itself with a certain demographic who loves gory revenge exacted upon. Even so, there are better ones out there (Revenge of the Hero/The Hero Who Seeks Revenge Shall Exterminate With Darkness is even more extreme and also justifiable because it’s all happening in the same and only time loop, and it has the same if not more than the over the top punishments this manga has).
* What drew me into the villainess trend was the redemption and self-improvement through subverting the villainess' role into that of a heroine and Fifth Loop sadly offers none of that. The FMC is happy to be along the ride for the evil dragon’s super happy torture slide. There’s only a brief scene of self awareness from her that she can feel her personality changing thanks to her connection with the evil dragon, and I think that’s it. She doesn’t fight it nor is it explored. The story doesn't show her live a better life, it's pretty much the evil dragon torture show (featuring Musee) and the story greatly suffers for it.
