Episode 1 As this show is by the same person who wrote Hyouka, there's an air of mystery to this show. To start things off, Kobato and Osanai meet each other and are committed to living ordinary lives seeing that before then their lives weren't exactly ordinary. These two have great deductive reasoning skills, and they can't help but to get involved with the mysteries going on. Their first case involves the smashed strawberry tarts as some punk ruined some poor dude's dessert that he was going to share with friends and family, and seeing it unfolding in front of their eyes they can't help but to feel the urge to step in. That was a great start there and given that mysteries in daily life are the backbone of Hyouka that it transfers quite nicely into this show, with the main changeup being that the MCs want nothing to do with them, but they need to find a way to curb their curiosity to stay out of the limelight. And the use of a cinematic screen lets everybody know that this is a serious-ish drama. Lastly, the ending animation is amazing, using live-action shots and inserting the animated characters in them.

I'm giving this the 3 show rule. The first show was, to me, a very weak hook. Yes, there is the mysterious angle, but that can be played to death if no great revelations are not made till near the end. It's got a Detective Conan feel and that's not so great.

The Japanese subscript to the title is the "Spring-Limited Strawberry Tart Incident". Might be the entire cour dealing with the aftermath of the first episode.

I like the 2 main characters, but I could do without all the jump cuts to scenes that have nothing to do with reality. They don't add anything to the story. Also, the whole "don't turn down a friend in need" thing kind of goes against the fact that he had a friend ask him a favor BEFORE the other guy did. The Kengo guy was pretty annoying and as Osanai pointed out, seems to be imposing on Kobato

Kengo is just the kind of person I can't stand who imposes himself on others because he expects everyone else to be just like him, and if you aren't he looks down on you. So that whole search thing was a bit annoying. Especially since he had just told someone else he would help them with something. I did actually like a lot about it though. I like the art style and the directing, except for that jump cut sequence which came off as kind of pretentious and reminded me of stuff like Wonder Egg and Sonny Boy that started out well and ended terribly. And I like the MC's. This is one of those that could be really good or end up very disappointing.

Uhhh that was ep 1 right? I feel like I missed something are they really not going to give these two a proper introduction? And you don't lock your bike up? The kid who stole their bike said his was stolen so obviously bikes get stolen in Japan. Whole ep kind of annoyed me for some reason, all of these characters seem unlikable. Also what's with the "let's act like a couple but we're never dating" thing? Dumb.

@GridironOtaku GridironOtaku said: As this show is by the same person who wrote Hyouka... Yeah I got that whole this is Hyouka but I'm going do do a bunch of quirky things so I can say it's not vibe from this. Unfortunate since I really like Hyouka.

I'm getting some "Sonny Boy" vibes here, and I mean that in a bit of a negative way. I appreciate the cinematography effort and the quality visuals but, it just feel like one of those shows that comes off as forcing mysteriousness upon itself. I'm also not a fan of the way it started, seconds into the first episode, with the 2 MCs already setting up other characters while the audiences are yet to be acquainted to, nor interested in those 2 MCs themselves. I think this is appealing more to the younger (teenage/young-adult) demographic. I don't think this would be a hard show to give a chance to since there's only a few episodes anyway, and the quality visuals does make it easy to watch. I'll keep watching as long as I don't get a strong "Try Hard" or a "Pretentious" vibe from it.

Episode 2 Kobato goes shopping and runs into Osanai, who is wearing a disguise, and then to see Kengo as he has something important to talk about. Kobato knows all too well that going this far just for a cup of hot cocoa wasn't the reason, as Kengo notices that Kobato has changed as a result of his determination to live an ordinary high school life. And there, another mystery pops up as there's a dirty spoon in the sink that was clean just a moment ago as Kengo was making cocoa, but how it was made given the clean look in the kitchen. After going through the thought process needing to figure out the 4th wet thing, which is the milk carton that was heated and put in the fridge after finishing up, and that's how Kengo made the cocoa. Nuke the milk in the microwave straight from the carton, then pour it into the cups and mix. This is a typical mystery from Hyouka here as it's something that ultimately doesn't amount to anything that's a big deal, but for the students it's all about the challenge more than anything, and Kengo was really testing them.

Now I want cocoa. Weird that Japan gives the victim a hard time for getting their bicycle stolen and used in a crime. Although, to be fair, that sort of thing happens here too. The cops want to yell at somebody and if the criminal isn't available... Weird show, kinda a slow burn, but I actually enjoy it. I could think of about three more ways to make that cocoa using only three cups, though. His friend may be legitimately concerned about him but has a strange way of showing it.

Did they seriously dedicate an episode to a Die Hard With A Vengeance style, "fill a jug with 4 gallons by using a 5 gallon and 3 gallon jug type question? As if it even mattered how he did it. Although microwaving an entire carton of milk, then putting said milk back in the fridge sounds like a good way to get food poisoning.

@marklebid probably because it's stupid and kind of dangerous, but maybe the point there was to show that Kengo is kind of an air-head and then accentuate that by showing him licking the wrapper. I mean, also, why did he need to call the MC over to his house to ask that question? Ask him at school

Uhhh is this really the show? What an odd format. Plus her purple eyes creep me out. And their whole we have an agreement thing is weird too, is she blackmailing him? As far as the cocoa "mystery" both he and the girl touched the carton before the dude's sister, why didn't they notice it was warm immediately? After thinking about it for a little as a comparison to Hyouka I think what this is missing is the charm or whatever you want to call it, that Kyoani imbues into their shows and characters. Whatever it is this show is definitely missing something.

Episode 3 The mystery this time involves a broken vase that was smashed in the cleaning cupboard during exams. It turns out the locker was rigged so that the vase breaks at a precise moment so that one of the students could cheat on the exam. Then there's another mystery surrounding Sakagami, who stole Osanai's bike, and then wrecked it. It all made sense when Kobato sees the bus to the driving school as he figured that Sakagami was trying to catch the bus to driving school and wanting to catch up with it after he arrived late, he took a shortcut and ditched it. First it was the strawberry tart and now it's the bike going to show that Sakagami is trouble, and she intends to get revenge on Sakagami. In the meantime, Kobato lets Kengo know that he's committed to being ordinary, but Kengo wants no part of it, all the while Osanai is about to do something that's going to get her into big trouble. So after a lighthearted mystery in the previous episode, it's two mysteries and a troubling development as Osanai is none too pleased about her strawberry tart going to waste or her bike being stolen.

So, they already chewed her out for letting her bike get stolen, what is the point of doing it again? Doesn't exactly sound like "guidance" to me. Also, the person who hit her bike and complained just left it there? So, how are they any better than the bike thief? Why didn't the police collect it, or the school that seems so worried about their immage? There's a lot of stuff in anime that might be exaggerated, but if true makes me think Japan is a nation of Karens.

I do not get this at all, seems like a lot of contrived nonsense so these two can get worried and upset over meaningless crap. "I could figure things out before everyone else since grade school and got excluded and chastised for it!" Uhh what? What amazing mysteries were you solving in grade school, who stole someone's pudding from someone's bento? Who has a crush on the new girl? Who farted in homeroom?" Who cares, you sure people weren't annoyed with you because you come off as a smug know-it-all? Or can't you deduce that with your amazing deductive "powers"? And why can't she just go to the police if she figures out who stole her bike? There he is officer, I found him. Or if they won't do anything wait until he does get a motorcycle and slash his tires. And WHY does she only whisper? Speak normally. Also what was with that sudden red toned scene on a bridge a flashback? They were talking like aliens "no we just have to act human and fit in" weird.

@MenchiK1 I don't think the red scene was a flashback, just a stylistic backdrop. He was trying to "talk her off the bridge". This girl seems to have done something dark/dangerous in the past, and MC-kun is trying to keep her living like a good, ordinary citizen. He made some kind of pact with her on it.

Episode 4 And now, Kobato tries to figure out what exactly Sakagami has been up to with all the circumstantial evidence, and there's a contradiction in that while he's on his way to driving school, he's not old enough to get a driver's license. So after doing some deducing, Kobato figures it out that Sakagami was applying for a license under Iokibe's name as the real Iokibe is old enough to get a license, and in the process lying about his age. So Kobato and Kengo head to the Kira West driving school where they meet Osanai, or more specifically Yuki's big sister Maki who is old enough to get a license. So with all that, Sakagami and four high school students were arrested for scalping concert tickets with fake licenses, and it turns out Sakagami wanted a motorcycle license, but for whatever reason was forced to get a driver's license under a fake name. Now this is a mystery that has far-reaching consequences unlike anything in Hyouka or in this show up to this point as it involves people committing fraud.

Episode 5 A new mystery and it's back to being a silly one with no serious consequences like the last one had. This mystery surrounds the missing Berliners at the newspaper club's clubroom seeing that one of them had habanero sauce in it, and anybody eating that would react to it. But it turns out that after Kobato's deductions, none of them were eaten despite reviews of them already being written, and that the plate was hidden from view. Just another silly mystery that was.

Episode 6 And now, another mystery involving sweets, but this time with Kobato approaching this from a criminal's mind. It's summer and after the festival, Osanai buys some sweets from her favorite dessert shop. While she's away, Kobato eats one of the Charlottes. But rather than admitting it, he decides that he needs to hide the fact that he ate a Charlotte from Osanai. Of course, he didn't need to hide anything seeing that eating his share is not a crime, but it goes to show that he's trying to see things from all angles.

Episode 7 Kobato's next mystery comes from Kengo, and this time he wants him to solve a mystery involving drugs. His clue is a cryptic symbol that he drew, and the key person in this case is Kawamata as they talk this over tan tan ramen. Then there's the Sanyadori Festival coming up as Osanai is so looking forward to the shopping district event, and in particular Muramatsuya's candy apples. But then Osanai apparently gets abducted and is asking for a ransom of 5 million yen. After some more silly mysteries, there's now a serious one (unless that turned out to be a prank that I don't think is the case) with drugs involved and now Osanai going missing. And now, Kobato will really need to think of something, and fast.

That was the dumbest note, though they really overcomplicated it since he said contact the person "here" and it was obviously a map not a letter. Also I am calling it now, Osanai was the one on the phone, she hasn't been abducted and she set up a game for him. (not sure if the mom is in on it but would be pretty dumb if she wasn't). Thus why she wanted to call him the night before to make sure he was showing up and at the right time.

Oh, those "Mary Jane" addicts. They will stop at nothing to get their "fix." Is this based on a manga that's kinda old? There's an unusual amount of landline phones in play and kinda a dated feel to some of the plot points, though it is otherwise set in present day. I also chuckled at "It's like we're in a relationship." Well duh, son. For a detective, you're the only one who hasn't figured that out. Yuki's mom is a honey, BTW. She looks almost too much like Yuki. Final naughty thought: Once he gets Yuki back, he should try dusting his dick with powdered sugar to see what happens.

@HOOfan_1 There was a Reggae Festival in the neighborhood. Some people were posing with a sign and tons of background characters had reggae color dress and wristbands. The landline comes up because Kobato doesn't answer his damn cell and they call his landline because it makes a lot of noise. His family runs a Japanese confectionery so it might double as an office phone. EDIT: Oh it looks like the manga started in 2004 so maybe the smartphones are included to make it seem more modern.

Episode 8 With Osanai abducted, with Kobato's handywork he zeroes in on the Nanbu Gymnasium as the location she was taken to as that place is abandoned and makes for a perfect hiding spot for shady activity. She was kidnapped by five high school girls involved in a drug ring led by Isawa as she has a grudge against Osanai. After spotting her, Kobato calls the cops, and while waiting for them to arrive, Kobato and Kengo go back in and when Isawa pulls out the knife, Kengo charges in to protect Osanai. He ended up in an ambulance, but he's a tough guy. That was quite the case there seeing that while it's one thing to rough her up, Isawa totally crossed the line by using a weapon. So with that, the second serious case has been solved.

@HOOfan_1 @MenchiK1 We were both correct. She set this up, but she set it up to get the druggies to kidnap her and get caught....obviously she set it up for Kbato to find her...but all of the vague hits just to make them seem like detectives, when Jorgo and Osanai could just say directly what they want is stretching this "he's a genius detective" narrative too far. I am still thinking she called her mom with the voice changer too, why would the druggie girls do something to have the police start looking for them, they obviously aren't smart or organized enough to ask for a ransom.
