Askeladd in Season 1 Ep 22: "I heard that my mother was one of my father's favorite slaves when she was younger. But after she fell ill, he treated her like a dog. For me, life had always been hard. But it was different for my mother."

Those words only gave a brief idea about the life of women slaves back in season 1, but S2 episode 18 actually put it in perspective, especially the "treated her like a dog" part. Bruh, the more I think about it the sadder it gets... Why Ketil, just why...

i mean, she deserved being punished (she was complicit in the murder of multiple people and freed a murderer). the only bad part about that scene was that kjetils reasoning was stupid, which was done in order to make him be in the wrong in this scene

EDIT: i shouldve know better and not made a comment like this in a forum filled with rabid fanboys who will misconstrue everythin you say just because you criticized the series

In what cases does she deserve it??? she wants to be free and not be enslave, and her being involved in that does not diminish her inabiltiy to do anything. The fact you're trying to victimize Ketil who was completely in the wrong SINCE the beginning of the series is strange

insane how badly you missed my point. Firstly, i was talking about Ketil in a meta way (what the creators of the show decided to do with his character. The way the events transpired in the series, he is clearly unwell and in the wrong). Secondly, being a slave doesnt mean you can just go around murdering people (or being complicit with it) with no repercussion

Beating a pregnant woman to death is a well deserved punishment for trying to escape. Ok πŸ₯΄

1. I never said that
2. He didnt beat her to death
3. You're arguing in bad faith. She didnt just escape, she was complicit in the murder of multiple people

EDIT: just noticed i worded my first comment incorrectly, so i understand why you got that out of my comment. i didnt mean it that way.

1. She didn't kill anyone. Moreover Ketil doesn't even know at this point that his men were killed so he basically beat her to death just for escaping the farm.

2. If Shake didn't stop him she would have died right there.

3. I am a manga reader so I know the fate of Arnheid.

1. This isn´t even relevant to my point, since i was talking about the series and characters in a meta way. I dont disagree that what happened to Arnheid was terrible and that Kjetil is a terrible person the way he is portrayed in the series. His wife also told him that many people died due to the escape. How could you miss this after reading AND watching the series? Furthermore, being complicit in murder is still a bad thing, lol.
2. You're right, that was a stupid point on my part
3.  Ok? How does that matter?

To reiterate for anyone reading this. I dont disagree that what happened to Arnheid was terrible and that Kjetil is a terrible person the way he is portrayed in the series. I was just saying that her actions throughout the series were worthy of punishment (trying to escape as a slave doesnt mean its ok to be complicit in murder or to free a murderer) Especially in the age and place this series is set. However i felt Kjetil's character couldve been used in a better way in this scene and that there was potential for the scene to be better.

Having repurcussion doesn't undermine what the justification is behind their reasoning... You're the type of person to say slavery is okay and trying to be free isn't okay. That's literally what you're saying.

Gardar wasn't a murderer... he was DEFENDING himself and trying to set himself free along with her wife. That's called self defense. you literally see last episode on how badly he was being treated before he died. You mean to tell me it's not okay for gardar to kill his master?

Then your point is??? Self defense isn't the same as warranting killing people for no reason. But wait this punishment is warrant because she tried to defend someone who was trying to be free and trying to free her? you literally see from the start of the series of wanting to be free.

This argument makes no sense

Anyway I understand your reasoning. I also think what Gardar did was wrong but we already saw in what kind of situation he was in. I don't think there was any other option left for him in order to escape the farm.

Thank you for the nice response. I agree with what you say and enjoy this series. I just feel like it wastes a lot of the potential it has. Sorry if i was mean to you, i just get agitated when people misconstrue my comments and basically tell me i support slavery, like the guy above.

Maybe she deserved some punishment for being disobedient, but beating a pregnant woman within an inch of her life is not it. Ketil should have stopped when she explicitly told him about the child, but nope he had already lost it by then.

honestly one of the most perfect 180s done on a character in anime ever, from the set-up - how he's a nice and wealthy farmer - and the fact that he feels like she's the only light in his life, it was all done perfectly, incredible

I agree with you, from a slave owner's perspective (based on the society presented in this show) she deserves punishment for her actions, however the motives behind Ketils beating he gave her was not at all justified nor were the motives behind it.

Let me remind you that killing someone in self defense when your life is in very real danger is legitimate in the real world, and that's even without the whole slavery thing.

You missed the part where slavery is wrong. Her husband escaped by killing his abusive captor, and then was attacked by multiple other people. With a modern day perspective, you shouldn’t think that people trying to escape slavery are deserving of being punished.

It sounds like you think it's a good thing she was brutally beaten like that. I might have read your reply wrong but literally nothing could justify a horrible beating that badly.

Yeah it's the sad reality of that time. I stopped watching the ep the moment Ketil approached Arnheid and had to switch to the manga (got spoiled for this one), cause then I knew that it would be too painful to watch it in the anime with the va and the OST.

Some of the dudebros on YT and Twitter are still trying their hardest to defend Ketil's actions lmao. Beating a woman (whether she is a slave or not) is justified in their eyes, it seems. Though I am honestly not surprised, considering the insane hate many female characters usually get.

very true about the fan boy comment, people are weird. I noticed anime fans love making assumptions as soon as you criticise their favourite shows. For instance, Vinland saga fans think everyone who criticises this seasons is automatically a shounentard πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Anyways I gave season 1 a 10, but this season has been lackluster. Dont be offended guys, I know objectivity isnt one of your strengths.

lol what stupid logic, so if 10 of them charge towards you, are you going to just ignore it πŸ˜…πŸ˜…. Gardar never attacked anyone, everything he did was reactive in nature. He never went out of his way to kill anyone, he was only trying to defend himself and get to his wife

Gardar went out of his way to join an invasion into another village. by default hes a murderer who as punishment got enslaved. Proceeding then to break free and kill not just his slaver but many others as well. Not very justified , snake was in the right for avenging his friends
