And boy, that former teacher. He raised absolutely no red flags, and I totally do not expect to see him ever again. Let alone as a villain.

Teachers are NEVER the villains in these fantasy anime...NEVER meaning almost always. Though how long is it going to be before we find out what exactly she did to get him and her ostracized. Almost sounds like her family disowned her too.

Probably ends up being the teacher's fault too.

They're never going to save the world long as the LN's keep selling well.

I wonder if they will be saving the world from themselves.

Episode 6

So that was what they meant by Mathematical Bare Knuckle as Claudine and Curran do math problems, and depending on who scores better, either Nick or Leon score free shots at each other.  Seeing that she's the muscle of the team that Curran isn't too good at math, but the Survivors thought this would be a good opportunity to study up on it seeing that she's been making a number of miscalculations.  As for Claudine, she appears to be smart, but in fact she's cheating as Beg is doing the work for her and communicating answers through a thought gem.  So Nick found a way to outsmart the Iron Tigers, and it was pretty amusing to see it all going down.

This was too absurd. I was strongly considering removing this show from my list, just on the premise alone.

Of course the female scammer claims it wasn't her fault. She was lucky to have him and only got pissed when he moved on without her.

Episode 7

And the silliness continues as now the adventurers go into a casino.  And Leon is still not over the fact that he was bested in the math fistfight.  But then the Sword of Destruction takes over him, and after Nick and Curran combined to wield the Sword of Bonds, this time it's Nick and Tiana combining to dislodge the Sword of Destruction out of Leon's hands and seal it.  It turns out that Leon is just like the Survivors and could very well join them once he serves his prison sentence as all he wanted to do was become like his late older brother.  But of course, he was betrayed, and that led him to seeking that destructive weapon.  At least the second half was pretty good seeing that Leon is somebody who just needs to get his head straight.

Episode 8

It just keeps on getting harder and harder to call this a fantasy world with all of these modern-world things, and the latest is a Japanese-style idol concert.  This episode is focused on Belle, the idol known by her stage name Agate, as she too was betrayed.  This time, it was her manager Joseph who she had a falling out with.  But after seeing Nick and Tiana at the casino, that sparked an idea as she saw their fused form as beautiful.  And thus, she comes up with a song called Beautiful Paladin for comeback concert.  It was a nice concert there, especially with her fellow idolmates holding up swords and all.

I just wonder if Belle aka Agate will join the team as a bard?  I doubt it, but the ED, which I like a lot, shows her prominently in their "band".

Ok this is a weird show, now he is walking around in a world with electronics and TVs and modern communication and he is also in a fantasy world where none of this is present and the two worlds appear to be the same.

Episode 9

And more crazy stuff happening as the Survivors go on a quest to round up a suspect, as well as bring down a priest who has murdered.  All this, while making a bit with the guild members.  They get the job done to win the bet, and the winnings are used to party down seeing that at least if the Survivors spent it, they would be able to control the amount of booze those guys drink.  And then there's Olivia who just reeks of suspicion.  The weirdness just continues, and I am wondering just how they plan to save the world as the title implies.

Good question.  This show is slipping down to borderline for me.  A couple more subpar shows and it'll be dropped.

So hard to get the vibe of this series. Some episodes I really like (this week), some not at all (last week). Those wild swings are making it hard to sort out my thoughts about it. Kind of annoying.

[ep9] Zem's child safety zone triggered and the others blocked to protect him. Bittersweet omg moment.

Geez, at least try to stretch out the villain reveal by another episode. Not that it made any effort to hide she was the villain.

Maybe? But it was the group's promise not to trust each other. Keeping the child at a distance could also be seen as damage control and minimizing potential problems for the party, not necessarily out of compassion. My POV as a viewer was totally empathetic, though.

It seemed more like the priest has been caught in an FBI honeypot operation before so now he makes sure underage girls aren't allowed within 15 feet of him per the court order. :p

Yeah, that was the backstory. Except Zem said he was framed into it. That's why the other two blocked the girl, to avert problems - whether they believed him or not.

This show is a mess. The mathematics brawl was beyond silly. The plot isn't what the title would have you believe at all. Much like the ED and song (which might be the best part of the show), it has heart though. The Survivors are all a bit broken in some way. Like Nick admits earlier, if he were a bit more broken, then he might have went down a path like kitten tiger man. Tiana knew she should value herself more than Nick, but she also felt strongly enough against giving him up that it might out her words as a lie. She doesn't take Nick coming to help her as granted, but was sure glad that he did. This show is about these adventurers that really want to trust again. They still have hope for themselves, and this is their journey to find hope for others - both for each other, and even ones that have strayed. Like "Never Fear" by Mao Abe shares, "I want to dance with you even if I get hurt." Life is better with the hope that joy shared will out weigh life's struggle if you keep trying and looking.

Now putting all that sappy stuff aside, I was surprised to see Belle's (Agate) boyfriend appear to move on like that with the tone this show had been taking. I appreciated the idea that the show wasn't leaving open this fantasy possibility that Nick and his idol end up together. That they could just confide in each other and be friends, and then that happens. I like the Nick and Tiana pairing better anyway. Also, I also took them holding the kid's idolization back from Zem to be shielding him from revisiting his traumatic past. The kid and Zem probably would have been fine, but The Survivors look out for Zem. Because that's what they'd want each other to do for them. Ah, shit. There I went again.

Episode 10

And the chase to take down the Stepping Man continues.  Reina is rescued and returned to her mother Ada, and while Reina wants Zem to become his disciple, Zem just doesn't like being next to young girls.  So in encountering Stepping Man again, it turns out to be Olivia, though she's just posing as that guy and is not the Stepping Man.  So the Survivors examine one of the victims in Martha, and it turns out that there's an illusion gem fragment.  That was the big hint here as Zem figures out the real identity of the Stepping Man.  It will be interesting to see who the Stepping Man is, but nevertheless there were a lot of twists about that guy's identity.

Episode 11

And the Stepping Man is Nalgava, a fellow priest who was trying everything and anything he can to find a cure for the Yellow Demon Sickness that his daughter passed away from.  But while he means well, what he did experimenting on Martha and other poor kids just crossed the line.  So the Survivors taught this guy a lesson, but then comes the armored warrior known as White Mask and that mortally wounds Nalgava to keep the truth hidden, and then Olivia drops in revealing that she's also not exactly human.  And after Nick combined with Curran and Tiana, this time he combines with Zem to save the day.  That took quite long to develop, but nevertheless it goes to show that good intentions can go horribly wrong.  One more episode left to go.

Episode 12 (Finale)

Just as the episode title implies, these adventurers are not in any rush to save the world and reform humanity, whatever that's supposed to mean to these guys.  It's a further look into these guys individually as Nick's parents were murdered, but Argas saved him from a bandit, while Tiana became a gambling addict largely because she's bored, Zem returns to being a doctor, and Curran saves another girl from falling for the same scam that Curran once experienced.  Then it ends with a summer festival and breaking news from Olivia that the Demon Lord is back, and while the Survivors are pretty convinced it's fake news, Kizuna doesn't think so.  And then the meaning of the show's title comes full circle as they will save the world, just not for a long, long time seeing that at the end the Demon Lord hasn't even been confirmed to be on the attack.  Anyway, it ends with a lot of silly stuff that's in line with what this show has been all about, and a joke ending is quite appropriate, I must say.

Final Thoughts

This show has a nice concept, great characters, interesting stories, and solid humor.  That said, the show's plot construction and story writing is just a big mess, especially in the second half starting with the Mathematical Bare Knuckle fight, and the production values and animation quality really drops as the show progresses.  This show simply introduces too many things that don't belong in a typical fantasy show setting like Japanese-style idols and casinos, all while the show has no sense of urgency to really get anywhere, which was foreshadowed in the show's title.  So pretty much, the only thing that keeps this show afloat in the second half after a solid first half are the characters and the way they interact as there's not much else going for it beyond that.

That was the weirdest and longest Prozac commercial I have ever seen.

The show was just so freaking random.

What the hell is the point of the idol?

What the hell was this whole stepping man thing ?I still don't get it.

In the beginning of the last episode it seems like they hinted Argas killed Nick's parents...then for some reason adopted and trained him, then as abruptly abandoned him. Then they don't even explore that anymore or hint that Nick knows Argas was involved in their deaths.

All of the characters in this show were pretty weird...it's like the author watched "The Breakfast Club" and decided they wanted to make it into an anime, but they like JRPGs, so let's make it a JRPG, and they also like idols, so let's thrown in a random idol.

this was no better than a 4.5/10 for me. I'm trying to decide if I want round up or down for my MAL rating

You know what? I don't even want to watch the last episode. I imagine its just as pointless as the rest of the show has been.

4/10. I'm deducting a point for having a decent set up but then doing little with it.

I think the point of the idol was to give Nick a reason to move on with his life. It was more of hobby for him to do just like each member has something to do on their free time like gamble, eat and pick up woman.

She can also serve as a future party member or even Nicks love interest. She did say that when she met Nick that he saved her or some BS like that...
She probably started to develop feelings for him from than but couldn't act because she had a guy at the time.
