Episode 13

Nelson has drawn the harem towards the center of the Sanctuary seeing that his power amplifies while everybody else's weakens to the point where the Shadow Garden is about to experience a wardrobe malfunction.  But that didn't stop Delta as she goes berserk in slaughtering all those Nelson clones.  While that's happening, Cid and Aurora reaches a chained up door that can only be broken with that sword in which only a direct descendent of Olivier can wield.  So until Alpha shows up, Cid can't do anything, and in the meantime Olivier emerges.  But while Cid gets stabbed, it's all according to his plan.  I wonder what Cid has up his sleeve seeing that he definitely knows something that Nelson doesn't.

Didn't realize this was 2 cours, cool. It's fun now that his Sorority girls are playing a more prominent role. Did Cid always keep his right eye shut? How did I not notice that until this episode? Weird. Wonder if Epsilon's "boobs" falling off will become a running joke from now on :D Cat girl geta more crotch shots than the girls in Fate Babylonia...which got a LOT.

I don't think so.  He was probably just trying to gather some sort of magical energy in it in anticipation of facing someone

The fact that Delta nearly craps herself, nano desu when Alpha says her name indicates that Alpha must be a real monster.

That was fuckin amazing :D

Pretty sure we're not meant to know why he has is eye closed until that final shot where his blue magic veins are running through it. Was definitely very curious until that moment though. Also can't wait to see my Alpha is so respected. If we're getting two cours this is going to be a very satisfying ride.

Episode 14

And having Nelson right where he wants him, Cid fights back with a bite, and then goes atomic after Olivier lands a hit on him to allow him to use the power of that sword to shatter those chains.  With that, the Sanctuary is no more, all while Shadow Garden gains some new allies as they are out to expose the truth of the world.  After that, the girls take a bath with the Alexia and Iris having a serious discussion about where to go from here.  Things were resolved pretty quickly here all while transitioning into what comes next.

Cid fighting with a paper bag over his head is hilarious.

I wonder if the king of midgard--Alexa's dad--isn't part of the cult too. Seems like every important person that's shown up is part of it.

What the heck is Zeta doing in the Arctic(Antarctic?)?

Looks like the girls are going to turn that one city into Detroit.

Episode 15

Next up is the Bushin Festival, and for this Cid changes his appearance to look like a weakling under the name of Mundane Mann, where he meets Annerose.  And then comes the tournament where he meets Goldy, and he has quite an interesting appraisal system.  That's one way to rig the best there to appear so weak that nobody is betting on him.  And it ends with Rose being accused of stabbing his fiancee named Perv Asshat, and with a name like that, I have to think that he's nothing but bad news who deserved what was coming to him.

Episode 16

Just as I suspected with his name being an obvious tipoff, Perv Asshat is up to no good.  While that's happening, "Mundane Mann" is continuing to beat everybody silly despite his appearance as a total weakling.  But with the way Cid has been winning, that has attracted Annerose's attention where the two trade warnings seeing that the tournament is not a place for weaklings.  Quite a lot is going on here, and the appropriately named Perv is up to something.  Then there's Beatrix as she looks just like Alpha.  Lots of shady things are going on with the tournament just a cover of what the cult has planned.

Annerose is too precious. I guess Cid won't be able to add her to his harem though, since she is probably going to fall for Mundane Mann

I guess Cid is suspicious that Alpha's aunt is hunting her down...I wonder if he will even bother to tell Alpha about her...then again, with Alpha's spy network, I am sure she already knows.

Cid just gets better and better. He's definitely got a bit of Saitama in him with the way he couldn't even remember Quinton. He knows how to keep himself from getting bored though.

I would have thought he would do the weight dropping during a match in the arena when everyone can see it.

The sneeze to beat Goldy was great.

I wonder if Beatrix knows that Alpha's been cured or if she doesn't know anything about what happened to her and has been looking for her this whole time. We haven't seen if Alpha uses any kind of alias to pose as a normal person the way Beta and Gamma do.

Episode 17

Rose has joined the shadow harem as she's been labeled a fugitive after trying to stop the appropriately-named Perv Asshat from starting a war.  Perv lured Rose into a trap, and Rose thought to fight back before fleeing.  And then she was lured to the sound of the Moonlight Sonata playing in the darkness, a song that Cid learned how to play in his past life, all while Epsilon mastered it.  That was just brilliant there, though Rose should have let Alexis in on what she has been up to as she's ready to be dragged into this mess, but instead of telling her they fight.  And there's that familiar face that Cid runs into there at the end.  Lots of buildup going on as this is quite a huge problem Cid and company have gotten themselves into.

Episode 18

Claire has returned, and is none too pleased that Cid skimped out on his promise to spend some time with her over the summer break.  So Claire wants Cid to see her fight in the Bushin Festival.  There's just one problem in that Cid is also fighting in the tournament, but nobody outside Shadow Garden knows that he's Mundane Mann.  His first match has Cid going up against Annerose, and uses his speedy movements to take her down.  Next up for Cid is Iris, and he's already plotting and scheming as to how he wants things to play out seeing that it's not a simple matter of winning the whole thing.  Whatever he is up to, Claire is starting to get onto him, all while Beatrix is up to something.

Iris saw Alpha, I'm surprised she didn't mistake Beatrix for Alpha.

Only 2 episodes left. I guess they can leave us to a resolution of the Rose plot and maybe Mundane Man fighting against Iris, but other than that, unless we get more seasons, it will feel still feel like a "read the Light Novels" ending even if we get a resolution to the Rose vs Perv Asshat plot

I'll be sad to see this show go. I can't think of any other anime I've seen before that's quite like it. Really hoping for a second season.

They surprised me last episode when he went after Rose. I thought that wouldn't happen till this ep or the next. He's spent a surprising amount of time thinking about Rose considering how self centered he normally is. I'm curious about where that relationship will go.

The little interaction between Cid and Beatrix was fun. The two of them seem to have some similarities.

She seems to know. He said he could sense someone powerful around, so she probably can to, hence why she tested him when the first met, and asked him if he was ignoring her this time. I liked the little smile she gave him when he gave her another sandwich. Beatrix seems to be somewhat of an airhead, completely unlike Alpha. It would be interesting to see how she and Alpha interact

Episode 19

Cid fights Iris in the next match, and he uses intimidation to beat her as Iris could see nothing but her death in the match that stops her from moving.  And then comes the final confrontation as Mundane Mann's true identity is revealed as Shadow, or as Rose remembers him to be the Stylish Bandit Slayer.  Rose kills her father, who has become nothing more than a puppet thanks to the drug Perv fed him, and a battle breaks out between Cid and Beatrix.  Quite a lot of stuff going on here, and now things are coming to an end now that Cid's harem is in action.  One more episode left to go.

Best episode of the entire series so far...and it ended just as it was getting even better.

I see they threw in a line from Full Metal Jacket "anyone who runs is VC, anyone stands still, is a well disciplined VC"

I loved this episode. I think this tournament is the high-point of what I've read from this series. I'm a few arcs ahead of this and although they're enjoyable, I think that both the drama and comedy during this arc is the peak of what that the series has to offer.

Nonetheless, I hope a second season is commissioned as I think the studio have done a really good job with it so far and I'm interested to see if they can adapt the source material for the following arcs in a way that lifts them up to the same level as this one.

Episode 20 (Finale)

So after revealing that Mundane Mann is Shadow, Cid fights Beatrix, and Iris joins the battle.  While that's going on Rose joins Cid's harem as a member of Shadow Garden now that she's wanted for killing her father.  The fight against Beatrix and Iris wreaks havoc all over the capital as Cid embraces being the demon, and then threatens to destroy the capital, but this time it was just for show as this was a warning shot.  So after all that, Beatrix leaves, Rose is now known as #666 in the Shadow Garden, and Cid prepares for the hour of awakening.  Pretty ominous way to end things going to show that Cid is preparing something big moving forward and those who stand in his way will really get it.

Final Thoughts

This show does a great job with the plot, drama, action, and characterization. The show certainly does convey the theme of operating from the shadows very nicely, and above all the characters are a great bunch.  While the show has plenty of intense and well-constructed moments, this show does have its issues as the storywriting goes fast at some points and drags at others, all while the show has so many moving parts that it doesn't tie in everything seamlessly.  Nevertheless, it was great to watch for the unconventional story and the way the characters are used.

That ending had a very "the story has just begun" vibe to it. It feels like the end of Empire Strikes Back, or something else I can't quite put my finger on yet.

This show was so underrated...great show. Now that it is finished, I think I may have to watch it over from the beginning in a binge.

I thought I had read that Beatrix asked Shadow why he didn't kill her and Iris and he replied "I don't kill people unless they are my enemies"

That was sooo good. Anime of the Season right here. If this whole thing had come out last year it would have been in the running for best of the year. It just got better and better as it went on.

If you go back and watch the last few minutes of the first episode you can spot Rose as one of the members of Shadow Garden. They only show her from behind and her hair is cropped short, but one of her curls is still left and she has the same sword. The two girls, 664 and 665, are with her too.

They also show Alexia practicing with her sword in the first episode and she has weights on her wrists. lol

I thought Rose would find out who Cid/Shadow is, but I guess she has to gain more trust first.

This needs a second season.

In the discussion forum for that page on MAL people are saying a 12 episode second season is rumored.

As for knowing Cid, I wonder if any of Shadow Garden outside of the 7 Shadows know that Cid is shadow.

I wonder what Lambda would think if she knew she destroyed the burger wrapper that Cid had given Rose.

It's kind of like World's Finest Assassin, but the MC doesn't take himself seriously at all. He sees everything as a game and thinks he's fighting generic thugs instead of an underground cult.

The MC is the kind of character that in every other show would be a side character, but here he's the main and it's glorious. By the third or fourth ep this is the show I was most looking forward to every week. And that was last season when there were a ton of good shows out too.

I'm honestly really surprised people liked it so much. I really don't get what makes it so special/good.

I was entertained, but mostly by the way everyone constantly misunderstood Cid's "genius".  But even on that level, I feel like Overlord did it better. I had a hard time understanding what Cid is trying to do. He wants to be a background character running things from the shadows...but he doesn't do anything.

No, Cid doesn't want to run everything from the shadows; he wants to roleplay as someone who runs everything from the shadows. His entire life revolves around fulfilling his delusions. It's part of what makes this suit my taste more than Overlord.

He actually does quite a lot. He just doesn't realize it half the time. That's the thing that had me watching this show with more anticipation than anything else the past two seasons. To see what Cid was going to do and how that would affect everyone around him. Plus he's still only like 15 years old. Which was around his age when he died the first time. He's never actually been an adult.

I think it's hilarious how he's basically changed society just because of the stories he told the girls he saved as they were growing up, and then they go behind his back and use those stories o build department stores and cars and introduce new music and fast food. I always felt that he mentally controlled everything that was and happened. It wasn't a real world but rather of his imagination that changed as he thought about things.  Kinda wanted the girl he saved to somehow make it to his world, maybe get hit by truck-kun on the way to his funeral
