I watched the anime first but I think reading the manga is much better because it has better visuals and some arcs were cut out in the anime.

The manga is definitely better imo.
Although...here is the hard part...
There is another manga...that u may or may not want to read before GTO...and that is Shonan Junai gumi (aka GTO: early years), bcoz gto is a sequel to this lesser known 80's manga. Reading although plot-wise SJG is not so important for GTO...it simply enhances ur experience(and u also get sime of the references)...and also a certain flashback in the last arc of GTO makes better sense if u have read SJG first.

The manga and anime are equally trash. Don't read/watch GTO. It's a waste of time.

I've never read the manga. So Im not sure if I can make an honest suggestion here. But I thought the anime was great, I'm actually going to re-watch it soon.

I saw this video on youtube about GTO, he said something like "The GTO manga was the one that he really remembers and loved. Because the anime had a different ending and the manga was better.

As i know manga is about onizuka life before being teacher, sometimes it's cool to find your character in the present time then find his past but maybe first reading manga has its own advantages
