I get not liking vtubers as they aren't for everyone and I dislike a few vtuber's myself but I don't really get how some people can hate every single vtuber and the concept itself at the same time. |

Yeah, what the comment above me said. They're sorta strange to some people. Some people already have a hatred for anime, and if we combine that with e-girls, then it gets more complicated. I think if you can explain it to people who are willing to listen, or show them some funny clips, then they may like 'em. |

From my own personal experience I think it's just for the sheer fact of how superficial and fake it come off as. When people watch a live stream they want to see a rl person behind the camera not some 3d avatars. From a vtubers perspective it gives them that creative freedom where they normally wouldn't be able to express if say they show their real face. As OP stated it's fine to dislike some but to dislike all of them is farfetched. There are some that are actually entertaining, very good artist, etc |

Personally I enjoyed them when I used to watch them, but one reason I could think for disliking the very concept is that VTubers (for the most part) are corporate manufactured characters to exploit parasocial relationships. |

Well this goes for all things, when something gets really popular on the media, there's always that small group of people who just want to hate it. This kind of hate comes from people who don't really like this new form of media coming out of nowhere, they find tiny flaws and dig their way through and make a big deal out of it. Examples right now being the new season of Attack on Titan, with the high scores and all, and the war between FMAB, people try to nitpick small things that they don't like and spread their hate juice all over. Honestly for the people hating on vtubers, they are missing out on all the fun. |

Not all of them are corporate. In fact, there are way more indies out there, corporates just shine the brightest. And the corp is only as much worth as the popularity and exposure it can provide. |

Well, I really like them, but also understand why some people don't like their style much (for hiding their true identities or "faking" their voices). However, I'm just a simple person: I see a Vtuber singing an anime opening I like ==> I procced to be SIMPathetic. |

Arkaisen said: I'm really curious did the whole simping thing began with hololive? Nope, it was used as a negative tag attached to you for donating to female streamer. Then people started using it with Vtubers, then people turned it into a positive thing. (A bit more off, but this generally applies to anything you can describe a person with. If you get insulted in some way, then just take pride in it and make it something positive. LUL) |

I just find people on here hating on Vtubers hilariously ironic. It wasn't even that many years ago when anime was much more niche and people would give you weird looks and think you're creepy/cringy when you said you were into anime. The same thing is happening here, except by the anime weebs that should know exactly how stupid that is. Just let people enjoy what they want, not everything is made for everyone. |

I am one of those that dislikes pretty much everything VTuber, so here is a completely honest answer: 1 - VTubers feel hollow: The main draw of most content creators is either their content, persona, or a mix of both. In every case I've found that a VTuber Avatar either distracts from the content, or detracts from their person. It doesn't convey any more emotion than their voice inflection does on its own, so the Avatar feels unnecessary. The Avatar's reactions (even for the best ones) always seem robotic and off-putting, and have an uncanny valley effect. I have yet to find one that doesn't feel empty and they are, from a computer science perspective, only an imitation of the creator. There is just no way for a 2d image to have the same emotional impact as a real human face, the human connection is, in my view, one of the most important parts in creating a good experience. I also find just Audio to be much more engaging without the digital Avatar. 2 - They feel gimmicky and half-assed, even if they aren't: Even though the Avatars can cost thousands of dollars, and that the time and effort to create, set-up, and manage them can be great, they still feel cheap and low effort when watching them. It's hard to get past the "Instagram Filter" idea when watching them, which makes the content feel cheaper as if less effort was put in to making it. My first experience with a VTuber was seeing ShinobiNeon on Twitch (A Samurai Cat Avatar) and thought it was unique and clever, my interest didn't go beyond the novelty. So when the trend exploded on Youtube the novelty had long worn off and it was more of an annoyance than anything else. Content that I might have enjoyed on first glance felt gimmicky. 3 - Bad VTubers create resentment: I don't think anyone would disagree that there are A LOT of terrible VTubers out there. Just having a digital Avatar doesn't make you a good content creator. There was an audio only Twitch streamer I loved watching that decided to get a Digital Avatar. I opened their stream one day to find this giant Avatar taking up half their screen, and it ruined the experience. I couldn't see the game, and they Avatar they chose was a 14 year old boy and they made it purposefully trying to be attractive (loli-boy), it made feel feel gross. I had similar experiences with other VTubers and would rather simply avoid them all, even if there are some I would enjoy. When you have a bad experience with a person, you associate it with that person. VTubers aren't just a person, it's them combined with the digital front, so a bad experience with one VTuber is far more likely creates a negative association with VTubing in general. The large amount of terrible VTubers are creating this negative association, which is why I think a lot of people really hate them. Would you be an anime fan if 99% of anime wasn't just bad, but actively made you feel uncomfortable? It's not worth sifting through the garbage to find those few VTubers who are fantastic. Overall, if you like VTubers, cool, you do you. As for me, I'd love nothing more than to put them all in the recycling bin and right-click delete. |

I think everyone has their pet peeve (or something they dislike in general) with/without a reason. Of course, vtubers could be one of those things. I can't speak for myself, since I don't necessarily have a problem with them (albeit there are a few that I dislike.) Personally, I hate the community surrouding the vtubers more than the actual content creators for obvious reasons. It's a cespool of obnoxious, over-the-top fans, simps and other negative adjectives, that is to say obviously not every single fan is like this. Last but not least is this ONA. I couldn't (and shouldn't) care less about the rating of this, but I don't understand how this deserves a rating that's higher than 6. I don't know what else to type in here, everyone is entitled to have an opinion, whether it's negative or positive. |

VTuber culture can be described as the epitome of the otaku-esque culture and audiovisual aesthetic, which may strike outsiders as too niche, repetitive, and frankly quite annoying. |

I think it's a great possibility to have an avatar as a youtuber that represents you (or makes a label for you) and to protect your privacy at the same time. But it's really something you must get used to, I think, that's true. Anyway, I don't really care about youtubers anyway and so I also don't get the appeal of these shorts. |

I also find just Audio to be much more engaging without the digital Avatar. First of all, what do you even expect from our today virtual technology? This ain't 2077. Go back to the future where you live. Secondly, for a 2D image, yes. There is thousands of emotional image that can express the same or better than a normal human face does. A cute picture or a video can make your day even better. And I don't think an Avatar can cost a thousand, now you can search on Steam for a VTuber maker for 8 dollars or on mobile phone for free and you only need is a painting of the character and customize it (maybe you have to purchase some subscribtions). Thirdly, the 14-year old boy you said. I assumed he doesn't have any experience of streaming properly or he just wanted to be banned or something. Fourth, the person who is an anime fan of 99% anime wasn't just bad, but it feels uncomfortable? No. One, that person has no taste in anime, maybe him/her/they prefer K-pop than anime. Two, that wouldn't be possible for a person is an anime fan that feel uncomfortable to every genres. Fifth, "you have a bad experience with a person, you associate with.."? What kind of idiot experienced a bad one which he/she/they knew that was bad, wanted to be associated, I assumed? And what is the point you made when you said that a bad experience VTubers make negative associate? Content? Appealing? Popularity? Or your perspective? (Disclaimer: I don't offend any individuals or groups, and I don't want to ignite a war, this is just my opinion) |

Scamboli Reviews gives a good insight as to why some people hate vtubers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUZwrbxk3Jk Yea, some of the points he makes are completely anecdotal and he even admits to it. What's funny is the last few seconds of the video where he admits that even Korone grew on him lol. From my perspective, I think people dunk on vtubers as a whole cause they go in expecting a HUMAN personality but get a portrayed CHARACTER instead, ofc this is just a generalization. Some people also have the fear that the person behind the characters are either old men or ugly hags; people are scared of what they don't know. As a vtuber fan, I love the parts where the line between the two are blurred, where they're still in character but show some humanity as well. I was surprised when vtubers blew up cause they were always a niche interest imo. Personally, I find EN vtubers that aren't Hololive or JP-speaking kinda cringe cause it makes "suspension of disbelief" harder for me. It gives me the mental image of a girl with an anime avatar as opposed to an anime character with a girl VA. |
