What was going on in EP 21?

(around 10 mins) in ep 21 kaori played the violin but it was like a clear magical violin? was this just the shows way of putting in cool visuals that weren't actually happening or did it really happen? Arimas reaction made me think it did

It happened in his mind because he felt the power of her before she died. Remember, at the beginning he always felt being in a deep sea without the ability of hearing the notes of the piano. But Kaori helped him to get out of his ptsd and in this scene he was playing above the sea- being able to hear the notes

Like the person above me said, it was a form of Arima's imagination. Throwback to everything he has done with Kaori, her music and spirit that made Arima's world colorful(to feel emotions) again like the first time Arima saw Kaori's performance and also that led him to be able to hear notes again hence the colorful and "above the water" setting.

That was just their imagination but more importantly I want to ask any manga reader that how it felt to read manga of your lie in april? After all you can't hear the music in manga was it just an average rom-com slice of life or even without music it stood out
