You should watch the first 2 index seasons, then watch all 3 railgun seasons, then watch index 3, but that is just my opinion
just a head ups tho that index 3 is a rushed adaptation

I watched all of Railgun before index (I never finished index because it sucked) and it works absolutely fine. There's a couple parts you might wanna look something up, but it's nothing necessary for the story

btw if you do want to watch it in the correct order chronologically then watch the first two season of Railgun FIRST. I'd recommend watching it all first, but definitely watch the first two before index

You can watch either one first, but it's generally best to alternate between seasons. You can watch the first two seasons of Railgun before starting the first season of Index, if you really want. You should still watch or read Index at some point, though.

Watch it before Railgun T. Accelerator and Index bridge the gap between S and T

It is not required to watch them, they are more like side stories. Watch Accelerator and Index between S and T, though, that’s about where the series of events lie.

That's up to personal preference, it's not for you or me to decide, which is why I said they can do either. Know your place.

Maybe so. I know that Index is a pretty lackluster adaptation and that the novels are vastly superior, but preference still exists and should be accounted for. I don't know the OP enough to assume that they are the kind of person who likes reading novels, but I also don't know enough about them to assume that they aren't, so letting them know that both options are there is the best course of action.

yeah I know people just don’t like reading. I was like that not too long ago. Though I do think if he read it, he would prefer it over the anime

Of course, most of us were probably like that at some point.

I would be baffled if anybody preferred the anime over the novels, so yeah, I agree.

No, if u watch index first it spoils the best arc in either series ( sisters ) with worse quality. Railgun 1 has some bad sol episodes even for me who is a SOL moe junkie, however it’s serious arcs are top tier and all relate to each other. Index has an amazing starting arc but everything after that is just good shonen fun ( I’m only mid way through index two but have seen all of railgun). Personally I recommend railgun first and it happens first chronologicaly

Telling most people that they have to read will almost always turn them off due to them wanting to watch something and expenses, I think telling someone to JUST READ is the worst way to recommended something

No, you don't mostly cause index blows and railgun comes first in the timeline. Index (anime) literally sucks you should only watch it if you like bad writing for like everything besides like 3 characters and stupidly set up and just stupid harems

I watched all of Railgun before Index and I do believe that there are some parts of the world in railgun that I would have understood better if I watched index first. That being said their plot lines are pretty much independent so there’s no need and Railgun is easily the best of the three series

You don't have to, but it does help, in Index you follow Touma, and Index (the magic side of the story) and in Railgun, you follow Misaka (the scientific side of the story)

Exactly, that's what I think too. Though it's nog that big of an issue if the person is seasoned when it comes to reading manga and novels, it is for people like the OP, whose preference to anime is quite clear;
1) They opened this thread on the anime.
2) They specified "watch" multiple times.
3) A quick look at the OP's profile shows that they have no logged manga or novels at all.

To somebody who's never read light novels before, I would imagine that the nearly 50 volume length of Index is quite intimidating.

Thanks for such a good reply, honestly I want to read index bc I heard index 3 is an awful adaptation but idk about reading fight scenes it just doesn’t seem right, is the action translated well in the LN or is it kinda hit or miss ?

It's like reading a manga with less illustrations, but the illustrations are more detailed than manga panels. They are generally very descriptive (Index is no exception) about what's going on during action scenes, so you should be fine. In particular, the illustrator Haimura Kiyotaka is a brilliant artist and is very good at capturing the ongoing action in the story.

I recommend heading the toarumajutsunoindex subreddit and joining their Discord server for information on how to get your hands on the novels. They're very friendly and helpful.

Yes, you need all index seasons to understand Railgun T. Remember Index is the main story, Railgun is just a spin-off.
