i keep seeing clips where Gintama's plotline supposedly takes a more serious twist i have this series on hold because i found the comedy rather meh or blah at times. though it still has some good moments.

“Evil is created when someone gives up on someone else. It appears when everyone gives up on someone as a lost cause and removes their path to salvation. Once they are cut off from everyone else, they become evil.” -Othinus

I think it is best to drop Gintama if you don't like the comedy. Gintama is very centered around it's comedy and is approximately 80% of the show.

The first major arc starts at episode 58. The second major arc starts around episode 105. The third major arc starts around episode 147. Basically, every you get a major arc every 30-50 episodes. Everything in the middle is either episodic comedy or mini-arcs (some of which are serious).

maybe, but some of the dramatic moments i saw seemed really good.

The first very serious arc is around episode 50 but Gintama's format has always been pure comedy with some serious arcs in between. When you get to Gintama Enchousen, that's when the whole show takes a very serious route (around the time they changed studios). But if u don't appreciate the comedy I would suggest dropping it because 80% of the show is comedy and 20% serious.

I assumed u barely got into the show, my bad

The first 201 episodes are apart of season 1. The dramatic moments you saw are probably from seasons 2 to 4 ([16 X 9] aspect ratio).

Season 2 - 51 episodes
Season 3 - 13 episodes
Season 4 - 51 episodes

With the exception of season 3, all of the other seasons are 80% comedy. So just like what I said before, if you don't enjoy the comedy, you are not going to like this anime. That being said, the comedy really becomes great after the first big arc.

Edit: If you are wondering when Gintama truly changes from comedy to action, it changes on episode 300 (around episode 35 in season 4).
Season 5 and onwards are all action based (with some comedy). It's a long way to get there, but trust me, it was an amazing adventure.

After benizakura arc which is from ep 58-62, gintama has a short serious arc every 10-12 episodes.

For me personally Gintama changed dramatically at ep 300 , now I know there are some arcs before that , but it's crossing point for me

"I want to show that woman the true Yoshikage Kira. I want her to hear how I feel deep inside. That I want to take your slender neck into these hands and strangle you to death."

Gintama is always jokes first.

That being said, Gintama gets GOATed status around episode 50 or so, because the first serious arc happens but, most importantly, the comedy gets exponentially better.

There are serious arcs sprinkled throughout but, for as good as they are, shouldnt be the reason you watch the show. The serious arcs are as effective as they are because of all the goofing around we saw before.

Enjoy the jokes for what they are because itll hit harder when shit gets real
