Anime character(preferably side character) that is weak at the start but can become op or similar than the protagonist?

I am basically looking for characters similar to like mumen rider from the one punch man, who is weak, but I know he doesn't become strong but that moment when he is about to punch that monster really made my adrenaline pumping! (though he could'nt do shit to that monster) Like no one was expecting he could do anything. But in that moment it actually felt like he was going to KO that monster.

So do you have such characters in mind?
That actually come on the verge of being awesome (though even for a short while) like the main character in the series?

Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom

A Japanese tourist (Zwei) with no skills whatsoever, not even guts, witnesses the killing of an assassin (Ein). Just as she is about to kill him, her master stops her, due to seeing potential in him.

Together, they do Inferno's (mafia group) bidding and work together to get rid of anyone who stands in their way.

Zwei eventually becomes much stronger than Ein. And a story of sadness and grief unfolds.

But Zwei is the protagonist of the Phamtom, not Ein.

I'd argue she's just a protagonist as Zwei. While it's true that the main focus is on him, she's also a main character.

As for op, watch Ergo Proxy. The main character becomes more important than the protagonist in the story after some revelations. It's a dialogue heavy and a philosophical show, so be warned.
