I've been told recenlty that my plan-to-watch list lacks non-action animes. But I fear non-action anime will be boring, because they all seem to be slice of life and I don't think I like the genre. But I think I can like non-action anime, because I like TV shows that are almost only talking (How to Geat Away with Murder and Revenge, for example, the ABC TV shows that resemble soap operas). I guess I like intrigue, conspiracies, non-direct conflict, schemes, betrayal, battle of wits, surprises, revelations, backstabing and mysteries. And I also tend to dislike old animation.

What are the best animes that are calm on the surface but intense below it?

Kaiji is exactly this. There is no physical action but an incredible amount of suspense and excellent narration. Plot is centered around the horrors of gambling

One Outs is also great in this way

Try Kaiji. Plenty of wits battle, betrayal, and other twist. Dont let the artstyle fool you. Fits well with the criteria

Danganronpa. Kill and dont let another person know about the murder.

Hell Girl. SoL/tragedy with mystery, the first 4 episodes feels repetitive but turn better

I started watching One Outs. I read Liar Game, from the same author, and it is awesome. But I don't like baseball, so I fear I won't understand in the future. Also, I don't know how they can expand from the setup they built much more, but I'll keep watching.

Isn't Hell Girl episodic/procedural? 'Cause I much prefer a continuous story.

Death Parade - Thought-provoking and explores the various layers of human nature, so there's lots of suspense, backstabbing, mysteries and feel-sy revelations. Btw, it's mostly episodic

Monogatari series - You might find it boring at times because of the lengthy dialogue but imo it completely nails the mystery aspect of the show, the plot twists not only bring suspense and intrigue but contribute to each character's development.

Hell Girl is semi-episodic. Each episode is different story while also having a continous story. The same case as Death Parade
