Is there an anime set in medieval Europe but...without any fantasy element to it. Like Samurai Champloo but in European settings.

Well that's an interesting request. Unfortunately pretty hard to fulfill, too. There's an old anime about King Arthur, but it's pretty obscure. Not sure if you'll be able to find it.

Others that I can think of that are even somewhat close are this adaptation of the Three Musketeers and these two adaptations of the French Sans Famille. The former is set in 1625; I wasn't able to find information on the latter's setting with a quick search.

Your best bet is probably to browse the Historical tag and hope that there's something which fits your request.

I wouldn't call Samurai Champloo bereft of fantasy elements, but Vinland Saga is about Vikings and aims to be a historical piece more so than most manga.

It has fantasy elements but Claymore and the Seven deadly sins are very good and set in medieval Europe.

Spice and Wolf (Ookami to Koushinryou) is set in a Medieval European style world and follows the story and adventures of a humble merchant who ends up traveling with a harvest God (who is a giant wolf but can take the forum of a beautiful teenage girl): http://myanimelist.net/anime/2966/Ookami_to_Koushinryou?q=spice%20an .

Ah, no.

(That anime is set 500 years after the Medieval period and is mostly about battling mercury zombies, so it doesn't really answer OP's request.)

Spice and Wolf

Claymore?

Maoyuu Maou Yuusha

Those are all European settings, but ive never seen Samurai, so not sure the resemblance. They are all good though.

I think you're going to be hard pressed to find something set in Medieval Europe that doesn't contain fantasy elements, especially when it comes to Japan. Medieval Europe isn't that popular there as a strictly historical setting, and thus there's very little on it.

A quick google search brings up mangas called Mercenary Pierre (set in 1429 with something to do with the 100 Year War) and Wolfsmund (1300s, knights?). I have never read either of them, but they look okay. Fengwu also mentioned Vinland Saga, which is vikings and quite good.

I can't think of anything else. It's not a super popular genre, as Japan has their own, rich 'Medieval' period to focus on.

most fantasy anything is set in this time
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong

Rose of Versailles is about the French revolution time. That's the closest I can think of.
