Did Nightwish become some kind of symphonic gothic metal with DPP? Because oceanborn was the good symphonic power metal...
even tho Tuomas don't wanna call it gothic (Marco wants it badly :P), is it gothic or not? ^^
I don't think it's gothic, I don't think Marco would wanna call it that either :S There's nothing gothic about Marco, he's more... lord-of-the-rings-warhammer-warlock-I-don't-fit-into-any-category xD I love him so much... ^__^
I think the genre that best fits Nightwish is still "symphonic power metal". There's tons of orchestration (the symphonic bit), loads of "oomph" (the power bit - sorry I couldn't think of a better term than "oomph" xD) and still raw, heavy guitaring (the metal bit).
I don't think DPP is gothic at all tbh :S If anything, Tarja's voice was the "gothic" element in Nightwish, so now there's nothing gothic about the band at all.
But, this is just my opinion. Putting bands into a genre is always damn difficult, and Nightwish are one of the hardest bands to put into a box and give a label. And personally, that's one of the reasons why I love them so damn much ^__^
They've always been a symphonic power metal band, just in their earlier days of AFF, Oceanborn, and perhaps Wishmaster they were a bit heavier on the metal side of things. This is evident when you hear Juuka's drum parts.
From Century Child onwards to DPP, the band expanded on their symphonic melodies by incorporating more keyboards/live orchestras. The genre remains the same though, andt if anything they've redefined the definition of being a symphonic power metal band over the past decade.
