The books are aimed at adults, they're actually just the content used in the show with sporadic, out of place sex scenes like a lot of visual/light novels. High quality entertainment.

I've not read the novels, and they may have been more graphic in some ways, but it seems pretty clear the absence of some of that as you guys attest, is a sign they are trying to make it appeal to a younger audience for sure.
