Think about it...

...the END of evangelion.

Takes place after the events of the series so it's in your best interest to watch the series first.

This is the order to watch it:
-Series
- Death/Rebirth (tells the same story as the series but it is very boring...)
-The End of Evangelion (An alternative ending (the series one was very bad, so just watch this one after the series ending or instead... you decide)

Series ending > EoE

But most people like EoE better for some reason...

Anyways, EoE basically takes it off after episode 24 of the series. (Some people argue that episodes 25 & 26 are the same as the movie, just displayed differently, while some say that EoE is an alternate ending).

But it'd probably be best to watch the whole series first, then the movie.

This one's a revised version of what order you should see:

1. Series
2. Director's cut version of Eps.21-24
3. Death and rebirth
4. End of Evangelion
5. Read Evangelion Re-take if you found both endings to be disappointing.

There are some theories suggesting that the events in ep.25 & 26 are what's happening in Shinji's mind during the course of the movie. But I guess we'll never know what really happened. Only Hideki Anno really knows. >_>

another thing to point out:

Both Death and Rebirth and End of Eva are in two halves. The second half of Death and Rebirth is identical to the first half of End of Eva. Death and Rebirth can therefore be missed out completely without missing anything if you watch the series (there are a couple of extra scenes in D&R that amount to maybe 30 seconds and truly are not worth your time IMO).
