What should/shouldn't be considered a sports anime?

I was considering some, like Kaleido Star. Would this be considered a sports anime? It has acrobatics and such. o_o

I was thinking about that too but Sora and co. don't really compete with other circuses and they don't have competitions, so i guess that deviates a bit from normal sports animes formula. I'll say the acrobatics inside are more for performances, not like gymnastics we see in usual competitions.

Also, would you consider Suzuka a sports anime? since it is rather romance heavy as well.
Another one is Angelic Layer since it involves virtual doll combating

i strongly feel that angelic layer wouldnt be called a sports one. and i know a lot of people think suzuka is sporty but, yeah, like you said, it just seems like a romance anime. thanks for the input ^_^

I don't know about Suzuka. It just happened to have track in it -- but that didn't feel like the main purpose to me.

...What about Ping Pong Club? And what about Initial D? I consider both of those to be sports animes. But I don't think Yakitate!! Japan as a sports anime -- I guess it's all a matter of line-drawing.

(I didn't know where to put this, so I put this here.

Other sports animes not on the club list:
Buzzer Beater
Aoki Densetsu Shoot!
Shion no Ou
Bamboo Blade)

=)

well i know i've been reading shoujo manga that centers around sports, but also center around romance. I mean i still think that its a sport series even though it centers around romance. if they go hand in hand its all good.

Even if Initial D and Ping Pong Club are iffy... those 4 should be on the club list, shouldn't they?

and why isn't air gear on anime/manga relations? the whole show focuses around the air treks and such.

when i first started the club you were only allowed so many animes to be listed, but thats different now, so if anyone has others they want added then i will try to do that. =)

i always considered yakitate kind of competition but i guess a cooking club could be established for that kind of anime... *shrugs* ps, i LOVE yakitate!! XD

Would Kaiji be considered a sports anime? Akagi is on the list, so I was just wondering what people would think.

I noticed the same thing. I guess it depends on how strict the definition of sports is going to be. Even though both Akagi and Kaiji revolve around gambling and game theory, Akagi sticks to a particular and well established game in mahjong whereas Kaiji does everything from restricted rock/paper/scissors to drawing lots.

first, ur avy weirds me out something fierce >_<

and second, i havent seen kaiji yet to really say anything... but if its like akagi where you could clearly see that the game ruled the theme then i would put it on the list

And here I thought blood and unbridled enthusiasm were like peanut butter & jelly ^_^

Kaiji is written by the same guy as Akagi and they are very similar in content and artwork. Kaiji has a bit more to say about the human condition and also mixes things up with a wide variety of gambling events. If you enjoyed Akagi then I would definitely recommend Kaiji. It was one of the top shows of the year hands down.

Do shows like Tsuritama count? There aren't competitions, it isn't like the typical sports anime, but the main characters are learning fishing and it has an important part in the show. What do you guys think?

Hmm, not sure about this. Sci-fi was still the biggest aspect of it imo

...wait I take that back. We have a fishing list in our club. Might as well add it too?
