@leaf: If your using photoshop 8.0 above double click the layer you want to put shadow on it can be a text layer or the photos layer.. by double clicking it a pop-up window will show up.. click the outer glow text located at the left side of the pop-up window you'll see structure elements and quality.. under structure you'll see a yellowish color just click it and a color picker pop-up window will show.. click anywhere until your satisfied with the color that you wanted for your shadow, after that under elements change the size to 6px if your picture doesn't have a stroke effect and 8px if it have a stroke effect.. now under quality change the contour to the picture that looks like a hill hit the ok button and you'll have the same effect as the picture above @______@

It's quite hard explaining sorry if it's hard too understand what I'm talking about.. if I have time I'll provide some visuals @______@

I have Photoshop Elements- I just use the "drop shadow" option from my "Styles and effects" tools section for shadows like that... I assumed that was how everyone did the shadows.

@leaf: You can't see the shadow while making them XD try saving it to JPEG or PNG then view your card you'll see the shadow.. btw your canvas has to be bigger than your picture..

@lyrical: to make rounded corners you'll have to use shape, on your tools at the left part of your work space there's a rectangle right? try right clicking it your see a rounded rectangle option so does custom shapes click the rounded rectangle then drag it to your picture you can also adjust the roundness of the edge of the card...

@winden: yup drop shadow is also good but the shadow has to be in a specific angle.. it doesn't appear around the picture while using outer glow the shadow will appear around your card ^_^

Ah, ok. I didn't realize. To get it all around the card when I want it, I use layers, make a drop shadow then merge the card with an empty layer then flip it around and drop shadow again then merge it.
Then flip it to the right direction again.
I think that with PS Elements that's the only way I can probably do it. I'll have to look into your way and see if I can or not.
Just 'cause I’m curious now.

@DropOut about the rounded corners i tried doing it a million times and tried experimenting with all types of things, but i still can't get the corners without blocking my picture or something of the sort. do you think you can make a more in depth explanation, thanks :)

@windeen: ^_^ I want to try PS Elements but don't have that right now.. my CS3 PS crashed months ago so I'm just using PS CS @_@

@kballet: change the opacity of the rounded rectangle to 0%.. after that press CTRL then click the rounded rectangle layer once a dashed outline will appear after that.. then press SHIFT+CTRL+C or just go to edit copy merge.. then press CTRL+N hit enter.. then press CRTL+V.. the image will show ^_^

@ DropOut: I don't have the latest copy of PS Elements, so I'm kinda behind. But I love it.
I have 4.0 and I think there are much newer versions of it. I got mine about 3 years ago with my Waacom Intous 3 tablet.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to make a dash like border- other than attempting to draw it myself. I tried that several times using the shape selection tool.
What I'm trying to get are lines around the border of my cards like the lines you would get when you use the marquee tool (If that makes any sense).

@windeen: I haven't tried that either but I do have an idea on how to.. why not make a shape.. then change the opacity to 0% then put a stroke effect.. rasterize that shape.. use the eraser tool and erase parts of the stroke.. It'll appear like a dashed border ^_^

I'll try that on my next card.. to see if it works ^_^

I've tried my Idea and unfortunately it didn't work... but I made it work.. instead to changing the opacity to 0% the fill should be the one to be reduced to 0%.. then rasterize the photo.. save it to .png open the .png file then use the eraser/marquee tool to make the dashed lines XD

my own style for making it, for the photoshop 8.0 CS

first, download this file, there are 6 patterns for a dashed line, and OPEN the file, they will be loaded to photoshop.
second, open the image and create a new layer above it. select the 1px horizontal line by the marquee tool:

then press shift+f5 and select 'pattern' from the list.

choose 2, 3 or 4px horizontal dash pattern from the list and press ok. make it again with the bottom of the image. then with the right and left sides, but choose the vertical patterns for the last two.
and here is the frame:

it's pretty easy, haha. about rare borders... I don't really know, because I'm using simple ones mostly. but you can experiment, and maybe it turns out good~
and animation can be done in the imageready program that's with the photoshop.
