Definitely not a shoujo. It barely hints at any romance at all, maybe twice at most. Just dark, mystery detective.

The writer is in fact a woman so technically I would say yes. Just like with apocrypha diaries the manga is oddly labeled seinen likely to appeal to male viewers too.

Doesn't need to have romance though. It's more about the overall tone and interactions between the characters.

This also doesn't mean much but could influence it. I see many shoujos not labeled as such which is why I asked in the first place... guess I'll download 1 episode and see for myself though I'm pretty sure this is a shoujo

My bad, I've never been 100% on the term. All I can say is I've seen quite a good amount of Shoujo and this doesn't give off any of the vibes they did. Sorry if my response didn't help.

No, this isn't. It's just a sci-fi mystery series.

Shôjo does not mean romance. Shôjo simply is a target audience

It’s ridiculous not to watch something labelled as Shôjo. What’s the reason you don’t want to watch shôjo? Shôjo isn’t a genre, a shôjo can be romance, it can be mystery, it can be action, it can be anything

The Apothecary Diaries is labelled as seinen because it is published in a seinen magazine. And it totally makes sense since the themes are mature and dark, they’re not for a young audience (shônen and shôjo target younger audiences)

Shôjo simply is the publishing target. It takes the publishing target of the magazine it is published in. If it’s a shônen magazine like the Weekly Shônen Jump then it is a shônen. If it’s published in the magazine Hana to yume then it’s a shôjo. Shôjo/shônen/seinen/josei don’t define the themes of a manga. There are shônen romances, the same way there are shôjo romances. There can be mystery shôjo, psychological shôjo etc :)

I already knew that Shoujo was directed towards the younger female audience, but thank you for reaffirming that. The reason I even mentioned it didn't have romance is because most people associate Shoujo with only romance. I'm not new to anime game.

What’s the reason you don’t want to watch shôjo?

because they disgust me
last time I gave a chance to a shoujo (grimm kumikyoku, which is also not labeled as shoujo) I almost died of cancer within 10 seconds of the female characters yapping about being jealous of each other
u may not give it much thought but this kind of thing infuriates me beyond measure
same thing happened when I accidentally watched 7 seeds
and I also disliked psycho pass for similar reasons as it is a closeted shoujo imo

This is like a Temu Psycho Pass. And I didn't like Psycho Pass, I dropped it after the first villain monologue.

Your Forma is published in Dengeki Bunko and as far as I can tell, it's a youth-oriented (mostly? or at the very least, at the start, was mostly) Science Fiction imprint so it's more of a general demographic rather than anything, I guess if I had to pick from the 5, Seinen would be the closest since general stuff tend to get grouped into Seinen I guess

Short rant:

I love it when people conflate demographic and genre, like yes there's exactly 0 romance shonen and exactly 0 sci-fi shojo/josei
