Plot Summary

It is hard to take over the world, and the enigmatic Il Palazzo, head of the ACROSS organization, knows this, so he aims to start small by conquering the city of Fukuoka. Two young officers, Excel and her partner Hyatt, are tasked with executing this plan, but standing in their way are the City Security workers, a group consisting of three mostly normal guys, a very severe girl, and some robots. Regardless of simplicity, Excel and Hyatt always manage to screw up their missions, which usually result in death and lots of destruction.

Heppoko Jikken Animation Excel♥Saga chronicles the elaborate troubles that the ACROSS officers get themselves into, as Excel and Hyatt never fail to do their jobs improperly.

(I added a "[RETRO]" tag to the title to make it easier to find among the seasonals.)

All these years I've been yearning for another Gintama-like Anime to watch. Turns out, all I needed was to go backwards and search the retro Anime shows to find it.
I've only watched 3 episodes so far and the show has already been total chaos, loudness, and batshid comedy!

This kind of Anime is what I miss a lot nowadays and hope to see comeback. I miss the School Rumble, the Galaxy Angels, the Cromartie High... the crazy, whacky fun comedy of Anime.

I'm likely gonna finish this quickly, and I'm already sad to know that I'll only have 26 episodes of this.

Now that you mention it, I see that your name is based on Excel's dinner xD

I love that bit where Menchi got treated so much more nicely by the soldiers and even named her "Micky", only for Excel to save her from them. xD

The funniest part of the show is the very final episode that was left unaired in Japan for..... reasons.
It was included in the home video release outside of Japan and it is funny as all hell.
But the edition I have which was released by Madman donkeys ago has a very funny option in the extras menu.
You can enable notes while watching that explain all the pop culture references and wordplay jokes.
And if there's one thing that Excel Saga is famous for, it's wordplay jokes.
There's an episode where there are so many pop culture references and wordplay jokes in such a short span of time the entire screen is covered in popups with Menchi explaining the joke.

Thanks for reminding me that it's time for a rewatch.
I'll get on that as soon as I finish Strike Witches.

I remember when I was watching Gintama the "Straw Hat" way, it also had those kinds of notes for the references, which helped a great deal, not just with getting the jokes but also to have those infos stored in my memory, making me understand future references made by other Anime.
I'd assume those are Home Video/Blu-ray/DVD exclusives? I don't believe I've seen much of those notes from streaming services.

That's the kind of 4th Wall Break I really like. Looking forward to it.

Most likely DVD/Blu-ray exclusive.
It's the only show in my collection that has that option.
If I remember correctly some old Pioneer stuff had the option, but newer ones no longer have that option.
Not entirely sure if any of the other shows in my collection can do that, but there's also quite a few unwatched shows from the 80's and 90's that might have them.

There's a super obvious Sailor Moon parody later on in the series.
Was so freaking hilarious, and supposedly in the Dub version they swap out Excel's voice actress with the Sailor Moon dub voice actress purely for the episode.

HAIL IL PALAZZO SAMA.

Funny I am also currently re-watching it, and this time with my mum so she can get some reference I am saying time to time.

What a funny show, shame there are no more show like this one (or very few I guess)

Not entir

It was only certain DVD releases IIRC, I think the later Funimation release did not include them.

The SM parody was of course because Excel's seiyuu was the same as Sailor Moon's, the great Kotono Mitsuishi, weird the dub only did it for that episode instead of having her do the character for the whole show.

Great anime.
Usually fast pace jokes are hit and miss, but ES did a god job. I love PE-DO-RO, Ano Hito, Miss Universe and Sexy Wife scenes.

Most likely, I don't think I've seen it done for any other show.
That being said, very few shows of that day and age went full ham on stuff like that.
These days any show revolving around otaku and Pop Team Epic do that.

I wouldn't have even given it any thought and swapped to Dub if I hadn't of asked why the sudden Sailor Moon reference.
As for the original Japanese seiyuu, the more you know.
Only voice actors I know by sound these days are Hiroshi Kamiya and Rie Kugimiya.
For obvious reasons.

Oh come on everyone knows Saori Hayami (Yor Forger) she's usually in multiple shows a season and (almost) always uses the exact same sweet soft spoken voice.

For sure. I was acually worried that it's gonna get irritating with how loud Excel is, and how fast everything was going. But it just worked for some reason-- maybe because they don't cram too many jokes into one setup.
The Pedro bits are definitely a very funny side dish for this Anime. Looking forward to his unfortunate predicaments. xD

You just reminded me that I marked out when I heard Il Palazzo's voice and realized it's the same VA for Takasugi, Shinsuke of Gintama (Takehito, Koyasu). My fondness of this Anime just went sky high after that. xD

That is true. She's become quite similar to Tomokazu, Sugita with how recognizable and similar their VA are for every character they work on.

I haven't watched Spy x Family so I wouldn't know.
Only reason I know those two is because Rie Kugimiya voices pretty much every loud tsundere in anime history and Hiroshi Kamiya voices Shinji Matou, Araragi and now Ataru from 2022 Urusei Yatsura.
And every time I hear his voice I immediately flashback to Shinji talking smack and then getting decapitated by Berserker.
It's become a condition now every time I hear his voice.

Good to hear you are enjoying it.
It's always nice when you find a show you can enjoy watching.
It's priceless if you can find a show you can binge watch whenever you are feeling down too.

Now I hate to necro a thread after the interest has already died.
But I do have a screenshot for those of you who find the show funny from my copy of the series.
Sadly it's not one of the episodes with the ADVNotes taking up the whole screen (But I just finished rewatching it with the option enabled and there were quite a few) but it is another thing the show does which is funny.
There's also a funny Puni Puni Poemy promo trailer on one of my other collections which starts off with "Please don't ban us" which was funny because at the time of the creation of the dvd with said trailer Puni Puni Poemy was banned in my country.

@Dosantsu They really went above and beyond with their shenanigans xD

I was also a bit late to notice that the intro to every episode was the mangaka giving them rights to do stuff. It just came off as a usual joke to me since Gintama has done it a lot but, I forgot to consider that this was way back then when breaking rules were much harder and complicated to do.

I really appreciate this kinds of comedy Anime a lot. <3

EDIT: Also, y'all my get some disturbances from this thread again since I'm planning to jump back into it again xP (I'm slowing down cuz I don't want to see its inevitable end T-T)

Indeed they did.
The bonus episode goes beyond that too.

The very first episode also had Excel assassinate Rikdo, which you now know was the creator of Excel Saga.

If you like gag humour and anime focused on references and pop culture I'd recommend Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star and Nichijou: My Ordinary Life, funnily enough all by Kyoto Animation.
They don't feel the same as Excel Saga and Gintama but they are all good watches.
But I'd hazard a guess that you have already seen most if not all of them.
Also probably Full Metal Panic Fumoffu.
But if you want anime with a similar feel to those two you are probably better off using the Similar Show recommendations on MAL's page for both shows.
They'd probably be more accurate than anything I can recommend seeing as though my forte is more romcoms than gag humour.

Thank you so much for the reccomendations! ^_^ Also appreciate the fun fact; Didn't know Azumanga and LS were from KyoAni.

I've promised myself to check out that Nichijou Anime multiple times now but couldn't seem to get into it. I'll see if I can finally get into it after Excel Saga.

I've watched Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star a lot back then but mostly on our local TV, dubbed in our (Tagalog) language. I did watch them in JP sub at some point but, I'm quite sure I've missed dozens of episodes. Might get back into it again at some point-- might add School Rumble as well.

With FMP, I might rewatch the entire series someday (promises, promises xD). I watched Fumoffu when I was a kid as it was airing on a cable TV channel-- also in Tagalog dubbing; I didn't realize back then that it was a spin-off-- loved it though.
