I know there are some OVAs being released, but not as much as before, even when bundled with Mangas and light novels. Did something happened like it related to the industry decisions?

I am just saying cause there used to be a lot of OVAs from before than as of now.

There are multiple factors:

  • Changes in financing. (https://www.animenation.net/blog/ask-john-where-did-all-the-ovas-go/)
  • The decrease of physical media sales.
  • The increase of web productions, independently and commissioned by major streaming services. (ONAs)
  • Extra episodes/content being bundled with the physical release of a series, which falls under the "Specials" category on MAL.

Part of me does wonder if there are still educational OVAs being made or if it's all released on the web and/or interactive media is taking its place. There were quite a few of them made back in the day (https://myanimelist.net/clubs.php?cid=72947), however, they're also some of the least documented works.

@Kwanthemaster
Well it's no wonder bonus anime keeps releasing as onas and specials. That makes sense, thank you.

There is still one type of anime that usually releases physically and that's hentai. Other than that, physical media isn't as popular as it used to be. It makes more sense to just release a series unfit for TV online rather than trying to convince people to make their way out to a store to buy a copy of it.
