He was someone Shouya desperately needed at the time. He unintentionally told him, that he is not beyond redemption and he can make things right.

Obviously awkward and goofy guy, but on top of that, sincere, earnest and goodwilled, almost too mature. I don't know that people like that are easy to come across irl, as in they tend to be timid, spiritually weak, and overall not capable of encouraging or advising others.

So I consider his existence driven by the need for the mc to meet someone who wouldn't reject him, but would be able to help him, in disregard for reality. You probably will say he didn't do anything that profound, but I personally think he had the kind of wisdom and articulation not many kids if any at all have.

In short, I think he's the least realisticly behaving character in the movie, a complete outlier. Not that I have any problem with that though.

I honestly dont know youre talking about Nagatsuka.
I like him, he obviously that guy who bullied cause hes bullyable.
Short, fat, emotional, not athletic, most likely not smart too, hes represent the more realistic character that going through bullying in school compared to Shoya.

He's a good friend. It's also nice having someone like him in the story since he's one of the very few characters not constantly hostile or on edge around others throughout the movie.

I found him a little annoying at times, but overall he was a very large part of the story’s emotional core as he helped break Shouya out of his self-made shell and meet new people.
