Suddenly, the god of the shrine appears, promising Rentarou that he will meet one hundred soulmates in high school. However, there was one detail that the god forgot to tell Rentarou: if any of his soulmates fails to get into a relationship with him, they will die. That was fucking perfect. Peak fiction. I don’t remembering reading all these 4th wall breaking jokes in the manga but that shit was hilarious. I’m so glad a studio like Tezuka Prduction didn’t pick this up. This is rumored to be 2-cours. |

Episode 1 Sir Flirts-a-lot is quite the appropriate name for Rentaro, and being rejected 100 times means something is definitely wrong with him. So after starting high school and praying to a matchmaking god, all of the sudden two girls fall in love with Rentaro. But thanks to the God neglecting his duties in order to watch Laputa, Rentaro is cursed as whichever girl he rejects will die. So to start out, he decides to date both Inda and Hanazono, and the 98 other soulmates he comes across. Pretty funny stuff that was, and the manga is great from what I'm hearing. Just about the only major issue with this show I have are the production values as the designs of the girls make them look like they came from a hentai. In any case, I'm curious to see the other three girls in the main cast. |

Yeah this definitely has Girlfriend Girlfriend vibes, but it was still hilarious. As soon as the god rose out of the donation box and the rope became his hair/headpiece I knew this had serious potential. That was a great sight gag. Special bonus points for making the girls look distinctly different from each other. |

What a ridiculous premise. There are going to be too many cast members for any real character development. It's just a silly slapstick show with contrived romance. I'll be watching. I mean... i-it's not like I enjoy that kind of humor or anything. Hmmph. |

OK that was better than I expected it would be. The 4th wall breaks by the shrine god were hilarious (and the "skip" button in the corner). Nice that the guy isn't a total bundle of reaction noises in the presence of any girl, too. Interested to see where this goes. |

@runec I'll be very surprised if he actually makes it to 100. Hell, Komi's only 50-60 into her 100-friend goal after 26+ manga volumes... |

Y'know, if I were Rentarou, I'd be a little skeptical of the whole "soulmate will die" thing. Kami-sama isn't exactly the most...reliable. That said, I hope the series knows better than to string us along and then finish it off with a big, fat "Never mind!" |

Episode 1: The End of Harem History So, what Nietzsche was trying to do with his philosophy was combat nihilism: He thought Christianity had exhausted itself and the world, that it was throwing the world away for an imaginary eternity, but he didn't want to lose the possibility of meaning religion supplies. He was worried people would slide from decadent religion, which already valued something imaginary as far as he was concerned, to not valuing anything at all, to a spirit of leveling and languishing where we are rather than excelling at anything and loving the earth and life. To do that he encouraged people to embrace new, courageous ideas—he called them new virtues—and thus exalt our ability to choose in life, and to choose difficult ways of life that shake people out of their decadent stupor. He did not believe it didn't matter what we chose, that lacking religious morality everything was permissible—because he hated the life of languishing, of cowardice, and of pettiness. This is why his hero, Zarathustra, is a strange preaching hermit who disdains even the pupils he gathers, that they might not become too attached to him and thus languish at his level rather than excel beyond, to the ubermensch. And Nietzsche hated justifications of mediocrity or suffering, the kind of self-denial that leads people to become self-righteous and act like they're more moral than everyone else. So he'd dislike the liberal defense of the poor as inherently disadvantaged, but he'd also dislike the conservative disdain of the poor because it acts like no violence was involved in creating the rich/poor divide. For Nietzsche it is the will that must be acknowledged in everything. We created our moral and historical condition, and we must take responsibility for and ownership of what we've done. Obviously I am talking about why The 100 Girlfriends That Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You is terrible. And not only that, it is the worst: It is the Last Man of the harem genre. For behold: Rentaro is enslaved. He has no agency, he follows the harem track lay out for him, nothing is his fault, and what he must do is patiently suffer that he might receive some kind of reward. And there is no question of the reward, or that in the end he will deserve it. He undergoes great purgative struggles, already punching and dirtying himself, just as the old monastics tortured themselves to gain a heavenly reward—and in the end it is all for the show of it. The four-leaf clovers lose their value as talismans causing love and instead become mere signs of Rentaro's goodness. The world is emptied of meaning, even as a literal love god is invoked to explain the situation. It's all religion, linearity, and ease. And there could be no greater contrast between Rentaro and Naoya, the ubermensch protagonist of Girlfriend, Girlfriend: Naoya has no standard virtue; his destiny is not fated even though he is in a harem anime. He has battled every step to keep his harem, and his dedication to it, and his own stubborn virtue, make him a champion of will. He embraces his stupid and will go where it leads, heedless of its end. He believes he can make that end. That which is absurd he makes his own honor, and thus he earns his girls. And aside from this analysis actually kind of making sense, which is ridiculous enough, it also explains why Girlfriend, Girlfriend manages to be funnier than The 100 Girlfriends That Really, Really, Really, Really, REALLY Love You: The humor in this first episode was almost all of the meta, winking, dial-tropes-to-11 variety. Yes, show, I can see very well what the joke is. The only part that I actually liked was when tsundere screamed at seeing the confession and dropped all those cans everywhere. That was indeed a dialing-up, but of physicality rather than trope. All the love god humor was incredibly tiresome. Girlfriend, Girlfriend is funny because of Naoya's doubling down in everything, and because his harem becomes invested in playing out the logic of his harem virtue to its end. I'm not sure how long I'll keep up with this; I usually stick around at least a few episodes when a show gives me this much to think about. But I think I'll end up deciding Renai Flops does this kind of thing better. |

Episode 2 That vice principal is one scary lady seeing that not only does she strictly enforce school rules, but those who break them get French-kissed by her and not only is is traumatizing, but it hurts quite a lot. That just doesn't bode well for Rentaro seeing that he doesn't really have the option of rejecting a girl. In the meantime, Rentaro, Hakari, and Karane hang out on the roof and play all sorts of weird games. As for the vice principal knowing that what the vice principal is doing is so against the law, Rentaro draws that hag, and then Karane strangles her before she could apply her dreaded French kiss. Then both girls kiss Rentaro at the same time, so that both have the prestige of being the recipient of his first kiss. That was just messed up how things transpired. Next time, Rentaro meets his next girlfriend in Shizuka. |

Episode 3 Here comes Rentaro's next girlfriend, Shizuka. She is the silent type who doesn't say much and loves to read books with her favorite being Circlet Love Story. As she's one of the 100 girlfriends that Rentaro naturally needs to make her fall for him, and he does so by reading her favorite book, and then showing that they are available electronically and can be read out loud. She's just like a princess out of a fairy tale, and with that 3 down, 97 left to go. |

This show continues to be way more solid than it has any reason to be. That was a cute episode, and #1 and #2's reactions to #3 are pretty hilarious. So it's a foregone conclusion we're not going to get to 100, what with the care and attention we're shown of how Rentaro actually wins over each of the girls. How does this show wrap it up in a satisfying way, then? |

Episode 4 Now that Shizuka is on-board, Rentaro introduces her to Hakari and Karane as they meet up on the roof and play card games, among other things. And then in the end he kisses all the girls, starting with Shizuka, then Hakarai, and finally Karane. Things could have gotten ugly seeing that Hakari and Karane didn't exactly like what Rentaro was doing, but in the end Shzika is on-board with everybody. |

Episode 5 Onto the next girlfriend in Nano, an elegant beauty who is the smartest student at school. Not to mention, her name is quite appropriate (Eiai = AI, which is what she is like). Nano is using logic for everything, and logic tells her to not fall in love with Rentaro. Of course, Rentaro won't back down seeing that he has been rejected 100 times. They end up going on a date at an amusement park, and she takes things quite literally. But in the end, Rentaro was able to tailor the situation so that falling in love is the most logical and efficient thing for Nano to do. Nano sure is amusing with her need to explain everything logically. |

“Beach episode is next. Let’s freakin’ go!” God I love the narrator. Yesss, silver haired kuudere Nano is here! In case if the thought has been floating around in your head, yes the GF names are literally puns of the archetype they represent. Hakari has something to do with thirsty in Japanese. Indo Karane is a phrase used in “it’s not like” or something. Shizuka literally means quiet. Eiai = A.I. |

I dunno I'm not finding much here. Like @auroraloose said, this show's taking its initial premise very "seriously" despite the weirdness. The humor is spaced pretty far apart. Translation Nitpicks, don't read if you're liking how the subs are: I find the translator's attempts to capture wordplay excessive. These characters *do* say some weird stuff, made-up words and puns but not to the extent the translator presents here. It feels like the translator is inserting their own idea of humor into things, making jokes where there aren't really any. There was one part from Hakari doing an inner monolog like, 'Well Indo-san is ... like she is' and they translated it as "nutcase" or something along those lines. Yes Hakari was low-key insulting Indo by implying she's 'not normal' in a polite kind of way etc. but nutcase is too far in my opinion. Saying "nutcase" inserts the character's (likely) real feelings on top of the literal dialog presented to the audience, which is really unnecessary. Characters say one thing and mean another all the time. Usually the audience should pick up on that. So better I think would have been, "Well, Indo-san is a bit ... unusual" and leave it low-key. |

^^I won't defend it as the sharpest comedy out there. It's not Kaguya-sama, and I don't think it's trying to be. It makes me laugh, and I don't really analyze it beyond that. Other anime, sure... But this is just good, switch-the-brain-off fun. ^Yeah, Karane (tsundere) is my pick. Nano (kuudere) is pretty, but too Komi-ish and there's only 1 Komi. |

Episode 6 It's off to the pool for the obligatory swimsuit episode as this place just opened, and quite a lot of craziness happens. Rentaro is knocked out by the fanservicey nosebleed after touching Hakari and Nano where he shouldn't, Karane is wearing a poncho claiming to be cold, and Shizuka becomes a castaway as she can't swim and her inner tube gets a hole in it. But just when things get really bad with a couple of scumbags looking to hit on Hakari and Nano, Rentaro has returned to tell those punks that they are his girlfriends. He finds Shizuka, and gets Karane to show off her swimsuit so that she can finally enjoy the waterpark. It was a rather drama-filled time at the pool, but Rentaro knew exactly what he needed to do. And after all that, the waterpark date truly begins. |
