Just finished watching this and although there are questions about the ending, I'm more intrigued about what the significance of the
. If anyone has any information from anywhere or is it never really explained.

I think he explained it in the movie. The picture only exists at this time and because it doesn't exist in the future he wanted to see it once because the future is so bleak or so it was. Sorry it's been a while since I've seen the movie.

Yeah that was explained, im more asking like does it have like a direct connection to him like it was drawn by one of his ancestors or it means something to him? Like why that exact painting?

As far as the movie goes, I don't know if there's any insight beyond that,
but it simply just correlates with its time, as the aunt explains it; a beautiful piece at a time of war and famine, which seems like is what's happening in the future.

Thus, for whatever reason, he basically wants to look at this "inspirational" painting at his time of war and famine, just like that painting was done in its own time of war and famine.
