in my opinion he is one of the best duelists in the series, despite this he is often overshadowed by kaiba or yugi, however he held his own against odion and marik

he's better than any duelist who relies on luck

Great character, but most people haven’t read or watched the original arc so they don’t know that he used to be a bully and beat up Yugi throwing the piece of his millennium puzzle into the courtyard pond.

THat part was included in the DM anime. As a flashback.

He was enjoyable as a character, but as a duelist he relied almost entirely on luck rather than skill. This was more apparent in the manga, but the anime sorta softened that by making some of his filler duels more dynamic and less predictable. Still he shouldn't have even been allowed to get as far in the Battle City tourney as he did, and I always thought that Kaiba allowing him to continue despite knowing he wasn't legitimately registered in the tournament was sorta out of character of him.

That was weird. Joey apologized to Yugi in a flashback, but no bullying was shown in this flashback. I used to wonder what he was apologizing for.
