Do i need to watch 1998 version to watch Duel Monsters?

I recommend you do. It's really good. It won't affect much if you don't, but it's one of those seasons you just can't skip if you wanna get the full experience.

It's stand alone and doesn't tie into duel monsters because both start from the beginning but in a completely different way

Actually yeah, but Yugioh as a show back in the day was phenomenal on its own without Konami whoring out the franchise like they do now

honestly I like 1998 better. I recommend you watch the original show first altough u can just skip it if u want cuz the original show and dm are unrelated

Not for canonical reasons, but I'd recommend it anyway, since it's still pretty great.

I recommend not watching any but the original, for me watching anything other than the original made it confusing... if anyone know the reason why then plz let me know.
