How squealer, squonk and kiroumaru are the only ones that can speak human language? When I see squealer talking to his colony, why he speak rat language ?

After saki becomes the village chief, they still turn non-cantus humans into rats?

What's the point of the legend of the fiend - the one where the boy and fiend die from the bridge breaking? It says he leave the holy barrier to get herbs. But why is there a fiend outside? If it means a stressed human turning into it, then what is the point of the holy barrier since the fiend can go inside the holy barrier. What does the holy barrier even do?

Been a while since I watched the show and I don’t remember the first one to vanish, but it should have to do with that as the storytelling per episode relates to the one disappearing in some manner.

For the rats, the ones saved early on by Saki also speak. More of them should speak the language by that logic, but some of them might never need to. Of course they speak their own tongue among themselves.

The genetic altering isn’t ongoing, it was done by psychics in the past to keep their power structure intact. If it was still ongoing the technology of the villages would be much higher.
