I've noticed that Ginko is the only person in the show that wears western clothing; everyone else wears traditional clothing. Why is this?

Masterful series but it left several questions unanswered.

The clothing is never explained.
All of the cases take place within Japan and he never mentions if he traveled outside of Japan.

I guess at one point he met European foreigners and he found their clothes to be more comfortable for a wanderer like himself?

I don't know if there's an in-universe explanation, but I think the author has said that she originally had Mushishi set in the modern day. Later she changed the setting to a historical time before Japan opened up, but kept Ginko's design.

In chapter 4 of the manga there is a boy with a polo shirt. In the author's notes of volume 1, she says that she "drew chapter 4 intending to set in modern times, but the other stories aren't set in any particular time", then she adds that "it feels like an age between the Edo and Meiji periods". Me too, I have read that the author mantained Ginko's design when she decided to set the manga in an historical period, but I don't if it was in another volume or was reported in post somewhere.
In anime, they probably changed the boy's wearing to maintain the historical setting. They also used the same character style of the later chapters from the first episode (the author wrote about her improvement in drawing in another volume).

It's because the author originally planned the series to take place in modern times, but quickly changed the setting to historical. But she had already designed Ginko's character and so decided to leave it unchanged. It adds a nice mysterious touch and also makes us question why Ginko knows modern science. I like to believe that he somehow time traveled with the help of some mysterious mushi.

This idea is super interesting because I recently read somewhere that one of the original ideas for the show was that Ginko was travelling back in time using one of the Mushi to help people!

Western clothes is funny but not my cup of tea actually. I like wearing rock type clothes cuz since my childhood I been interested on Rock music and everything connected with that. I usually buy clothes and accessories here https://hardnheavy.store/ . Wide choice and good prices.

If I recall there was a scene early on in Kuroshitsuji that reminds me of this... Ciel is buying/selling drugs and when he gets a sample of the "product" they are hidden inside video game cartridges... I guess the authors just changed what they wanted to do over time.
