| It seems there was a crappy old encode that was windowboxed that everyone is using. There is a torrent out there that claims to be fixed. Messing with aspect ratio on your video player may also help. |

| You're watching an old DVD or video that's letterboxed and formatted for 4:3 TVs. What used to happen on old videos that were in widescreen is that they would place black bars on the top and bottom of the footage to maintain the widescreen aspect ratio while fitting it into a 4:3 screen size (rather than stretching it to the top and bottom of the screen and distorting the picture). Watching videos formatted like this on a widescreen TV adds black bars to the sides because it's trying to maintain the same 4:3 aspect ratio without stretching the footage, even though it has extra space now. It basically comes down to this DVD (or whatever source this footage came from) being old and not programmed with widescreen TVs in mind. The easiest way to correct this is to adjust your TV's display settings and zoom in. |
| in VLC if you set the Video > Crop > 16:9 it mostly fixes it |
