It has been a while, but with the return of the MyAnimeList APIs (anoucement here), we announce that we will be restoring MyAnimeList Support back into our apps this fall. Note that the process will take a while since I will need to implement the new API into the app and testing of the API during the closed beta. The apps will be available for testing once the API hit open beta.

First off, MAL Updater OS X is officially retired and will be replaced with Hachidori. This is because Hachidori, which is based off the code of MAL Updater OS X is ahead of development since the API was turn off. I just figured that it would be easier to just add MyAnimeList support to Hachidori rather than supporting two separate apps. The functionality is mostly the same, except it supports multiple services and can scrobble to all three services at the same time, provided that the user donated to the project.

Users who have supported MAL Updater OS X through a donation will not have to buy a Hachidori license. You can use your existing donation license for MAL Updater OS X. You can do this by updating to the latest version of MAL Updater OS X and view the about dialog. Your license key will appear. Use the key and name for the license to unlock the donor features in Hachidori. A beta will become available once the MAL API reaches open beta.

As for Shukofukurou, we will be doing the same. MyAnimeList support will be restored in 3.4, but it will only have functionality that is only in the official API. However, since the downtime, we have created an iOS/iPadOS version.

However, the iOS/iPadOS version is not free and costs $2.99 since it costs money to distribute the app to the App Store and I cannot afford the costs of paying for the Apple’s Developer Program Membership necessary to distribute the app. The donations I receive from App Store, Donation Licenses and Patreon currently covers this and other infrastructure costs (server and domain). Without funding, the apps would not exist at all. However, there is a free community version for those who already have an Apple Developer Program that can be sideloaded and be used for an unlimited period of time.

The iOS/iPadOS version has been out since October of last year has been a success. While it only supports Kitsu and AniList, it allows users to manage lists from multiple services from one app. Since then, we added features from the macOS version to the mobile version, especially with the expanded functionality for the iPad with iPadOS. Unlike other MyAnimeList clients, Shukofukurou for iOS/iPadOS is open source and development is supported through donations from users from the App Store, donation licenses, and Patreon.

Eventually, I want to make the iOS/iPadOS version of Shukofukurou free, but we first need to cover the entire cost of the Apple’s Developer Program at a minimum to make that happen. The goal for that is $10 a month on Patreon (after taking account of the fees). If you want to support the development of our projects, you are free to become a patron for little as $1 a month. You will gain access to donor features for Hachidori and Shukofukurou for macOS, developer updates on the Patreon feed, TestFlight, and having your name appear in the list of patrons in the about dialog of all our apps. Shukofukurou for iOS/iPadOS will have MyAnimeList support released sometime in the fall when the open beta is available and iOS/iPadOS 13 is finally released.

Once the app will become free after the goal is reached, it will have most of the features unlocked, except for list exporting, stream site scrobble functionality, list syncing, and other features reserved for donors. People who purchased the app will get these features unlocked automatically without additional cost. Users that haven’t can unlock them for $2.99, which will go towards development. Patrons will be able to unlock these features as well, once the app becomes free.

With that, we look forward to bringing back MyAnimeList support to our apps and have the apps available for testing once the API hits open beta. You can follow our development blog on our website for the latest updates or follow us on Twitter. Weekly development updates are available exclusively for active Patrons.

The API Closed Beta has started and development in adding MyAnimeList support is in progress. If you want to follow the progress of the developments, development updates will be made on Patreon. Only active patrons can see these updates. You can support our apps by supporting us on Patron

Open beta is estimated to happen in late October/early November. Only active patrons will be able to test the iOS/iPadOS version via TestFlight, but the macOS Apps (Hachidori and Shukofukurou for macOS) will be available for download without being a Patreon supporter.
