After the security review finished last summer, our previous owners promised routine updates on the development progress towards a new public API. These updates stalled and, several months later, MyAnimeList was acquired by our current owners, Media Do.

Since the acquisition, we have been in constant talks with Media Do, discussing the unfortunate events of last year and the importance of a public API for the community. Media Do has strongly agreed with this and has been planning the release of a public API as a first priority of development, even while we've been in a "transition stage" from our previous owners.

At the end of June, we began discussing the legal agreement terms for a public API with a closed group of 3rd party developers—many of which are the creators of some of your favourite (long lost) applications. We believe we are fairly close to a final version of this agreement, and immediately after approval, a closed beta phase for the API will begin.

During this closed beta phase, the closed group of consultant 3rd party developers will be able to test the API and make any necessary modifications to their applications for compatibility. We estimate this phase to take approximately 2 months from its start. After closed beta, we will enter an open beta phase. Our closed group of developers will be able to make their applications available to the whole community; however, new developers will not be able to request approval to use the API yet.

The open beta phase will last until MyAnimeList's development team is confident we can technically support a public API for any and every interested 3rd party developer to join. At that point, we plan to open the API to the public.

TL;DR: Applications you already love should hopefully be able to return during the open beta phase (depending on their creators), but new applications will not be able to use the API until at least half a year from now.

We will announce the beginning of the open beta phase for the API once it starts (currently estimated for sometime in September) and will discuss the plans of our closed official Android app at that time as well.

We would like to deeply thank the 3rd party developers and community for your incredible patience over the last year—your class has been upgraded to saintly levels. From here, we sincerely hope to progress toward a public API that our 3rd party developers can feel positive about. Thank you for never giving up on us.

I'm super excited to see the community get involved with our new API and I can't wait to use (and re-use) the unique and creative applications and tools that will be developed!

Please be patient just a little while longer!

FINALLY! I wouldn't mind the official MAL app, but it's severely lacking and I had a favorite one before that. I can't wait! Though 2 months sound like an eternity haha. Hopefully things will turn out well :D

how many people leave ? how many dev lost her work ?

Nice!
Relying on the Jikan API hasn't been too great as it's really buggy using .NET Framework. Looking forward to the official public API! :)

I'll be excited to see what I can do with this. I already have some ideas. Will there be any oversight as to who can use the API for what? Or is it a free-for-all?

@Kineta

I really wonder how this team of 3rd party devs selected but rather than asking this, I like to know if there will be a limit for "request per minute/hour".

Other than that, good news.

Not directly. It means that Taiga will be able to participate in the closed and open beta, if its creator chooses to. erengy may decide to wait until all the functionality he needs is in the new API, or he may decide he's lost interest in MAL altogether. All we're doing is trying to make the choice available to the 3rd party developers, compared to one year ago when they were not given any choice or notice.

Personally, I've always enjoyed speaking with erengy and hope to see more of him again. However, time doesn't stand still, so we'll need to see what he decides is best for him.

There will be terms that you'll need to agree to which outline what you can and cannot do with it.

Taiga isn't developed by us. Not sure if this is a serious question, but in short, it's not possible.

Agree.. Pocket mal was definitely my first application to open when I was updating anime. Although there are a few other apps with their own API, which replaces pocket mal. I am still hungry to use it and for it to come back ㅠㅠ
