So, i'm pretty flexible when it comes to dubs vs subs; i'll usually give a dub a fair shot if i hear good things about it, which is the case with RK's dub (the Media Blasters one, the one on Netflix). I kept hearing that it's very beloved and is considered one of the best dubs of all time.

However, i'm about 9 Eps. into the series and i'm just... not feeling it, so far. Most of the line deliveries sound so flat and lifeless, especially Sanosuke, who tends to talk in a monotonous tone more often than not.

So i wanna know some of your opinions. Is the english dub just dated by today's standards? Is the praise for it based on nostalgia? I know that sometimes voice actors take a little while to get settled into their roles, so do they get any better as the series goes on?

To be honest it is kind of dated by today's standards it's kind of like a relic from another time. I got used to it over time but I generally avoid the sub though because Himura's VA is a woman and it's very apparent. His obviously female voice just takes me out of it and my disbelief can only be suspended for so much.

Kenshin is largely overrated imo.
It starts off quite slow, You should get some action from the fight with the guy who wields 2 short swords
The series peaks in the shishio arc, then fills out the end half of the anime with boring junk.

Funny thing is, i don’t usually mind dated dubs; i actually enjoyed the (generally disliked) 90’s Evangelion dub, but for some reason i just can’t get into this one.

Yeah, Kenshin’s girly voice in the sub is weird for sure; but on the other hand, Kaoru’s sub voice is freakin’ adorable and, imho, is infinitely better than her dub voice.

Either way, i’m thinkin’ i’ll give it a few more episodes to see if it grows on me eventually, before i make my final choice. Thanks for your input :)
