I catalogue my dub/sub preference with each show I like. And normally I don't have any trouble with it. But after quickly surveying the dub in a few key scenes, I am thoroughly conflicted. Even a recommendation of "either" feels wrong to me.

On the one hand, Rei's voice acting is better in the dub. The degree to which it's better I am unsure. However, I can confidently say it is. I think the quality of his voice acting is particularly important to this show

On the other hand, Momo is SO much more adorable in the sub. The difference in adorableness is far greater in this case and perhaps alone it can warrant watching the sub.

The issue here is that with either version you'd be making a grave sacrifice. If you watch the dub, Momo would be significantly less cute. If you watch the sub, Rei's scene in episode 10 is far less powerful. It's a lose-lose scenario.

I'm not sure whether I'm asking for advice here, or offering it. I'm probably going to give it the recommendation to watch both (The only other show that earns such attention being Steins;gate, which I've watched 5 times, all 5 times dubbed). So yeah, I guess you should take that as my recommendation, perhaps I'd say dub first and then sub (Because if you know of Momo's cuteness potential while watching the dub it might be a bit tough)

EDIT: In hindsight, I decided to compromise and decide on the dub over sub. I also did some checking and the cuteness difference quotient isn't as high as I thought it was. So yeah.

Also, now that I think about it the poll is useless.

PRESENTLY STANDING RECOMMENDATION: DUB

Hello Tenderizer17,

Very happy to see someone like you post a thread about the English dub for 3-gatsu no Lion and showing your love for it. Ever since I saw Aniplex's English dub trailer a few months ago, never have I been more hyped to watch this beautiful show in English. You can hate Aniplex all you want for their exorbitant pricing on their blu ray sets, but you can't deny they tend to produce very high-quality English dubs most of the time (heck they've been kicking Funimation's ass lately when it comes to that). For me, having this show being blessed with a very well-done English dub will increase my love for it even more.

Rei Kiriyama - Khoi Dao's performance as Rei is the absolute highlight of the dub. He is Rei Kiriyama. He carries the depressed and nervous tone very well for the character. Never in my wildest dreams he would surpass his Japanese counterpart and he's a newcomer who has less roles for crying out loud. How is this possible lol!?!?

Momo Kawamoto - I do have to agree that the Japanese version has the edge here. Misaki Kuno, her Japanese VA, had this unique and adorable baby tone to her voice that would be difficult for the English VA's to match without sounding forced. Now that isn't to say that Xanthe Huynh, her English VA, sounds terrible. Considering she doesn't sound as adorable as the Japanese version, she still has a fitting cute voice for the character which is an accomplishment in its own right. Like c'mon the way she said "See you later!" to Rei toward the end of Episode 1 was adorable. Thank god she doesn't sound horrible.

Other Characters - No compliants so far. They all sound what I expect to in English and are on par with their Japanese voices.

Although we've only watched the first 11 dubbed episodes, we still haven't heard the rest of the cast in English yet and so I think it's too early to say the dub is superior. What is safe to say is that the English dub has the incredible potential to be on par with the original Japanese version. Wendee Lee, the ADR Director of this dub, is doing a wonderful job with the cast and I'm confident she'll continue to cast the right voice actors for the rest of the characters in this show.

@Silent-Ninja

When I first saw the trailer, I thought to myself "I'm not gonna like this dub" and started trying to spin humour out of my complaints. It didn't take long for me to change my stance.

I actually got chills watching the scene from episode 10 dubbed.

The problem is that both versions are absolutely incredible in some areas and great in others, but their greatest strengths don't overlap. IT'S SO FRUSTRATING.

I decided to recommend the dub, not because it's better, but because it's too close to call and when that happens I'll usually recommend the dub anyway because it's in english.

I've personally never made it all the way through re-watching the first season of this. I think I'd be able to with this english dub.

Nope it didn't take long at all lol. For me, I just knew it would be very good off the bat.

Yeah me too. That scene alone helped me decide which voice actor for Rei is superior.

Yeah, it's frustrating but that's also what gives each version their own unique charm. Can't have everything I guess. Oh well. I don't know if you're interested, but here's a list of the English voice cast so far.

Ah that's fair enough. I probably would do the same as I'm also a native English speaker.

What I've heard is that the dub is not gonna be available for legal streaming ever and the blu-ray's are really expensive. No idea what the credibility of what I've heard is but long story short, fuck legal streaming anyway, it doesn't help the industry much.

Actually the entire first season's dub just got released on Crunchyroll yesterday. I wish I was joking but I'm not lol. You could either watch it there or patiently wait for it to show up on KissAnime. I'm already watching the second half of the first season dubbed, so I'm curious to read your thoughts on on it when you get the chance to watch.

Well, I take it the credibility of my assertion is 0 then. Don't know why you'd wish you were joking though, if the dub's out that's a good thing. It's a real shame though since my crunchyroll subscription expired yesterday (And I didn't bother renewing it since I saw no benefit in it)

I've seen episodes 1 and 10 dubbed, and I got to say, the dub is a lot better. Momo doesn't sound as good, but Hina and Rei sound better. Nikaidou sounds a touch goofy but not necessarily insufferable. I honestly prefer the dub. Maybe I won't like it as much after watching it through, but there's no way the show would be bad dubbed (even if it ends up being poorly dubbed).

Sorry, what I meant by "wishing I was joking" was that I didn't expect Crunchyroll to post the entire first season's dub on their site, that's all. From what I've learned, it was Aniplex's decision to have the dub be available on Crunchyroll probably due to their close business relationship or something. In any case, I'm glad the dub is available for legal streaming and I wouldn't be surprised if multiple people are rewatching the first season as we speak.

While I do agree with your assessment of Momo, Hina, Nikaidou, and Rei's English voices, I'm still surprised you've only watched episodes 1 and 10 dubbed to make your overall judgement on the dub. There are other characters who also deserve to be assessed too like Shimada for example, so I'm curious what your thoughts will be after you finished watching the entire dub of the first season.

I think I might have also watched episode 11. But still, this process is surely better than just watching the trailer and expressing ones hatred towards the dub (Like almost every sub elitist on the internet).

And like I said, I'm fairly certain I won't end up hating the dub at this point. At most I'll just end up preferring the sub.
