I'm haven't seen a lot of anime but the ones that I have seen which are usually battle shounens and all the MCs hardly ever eat vegetables, meats are always on the menu for these characters. So I was just wondering if it is a cultural thing or something else.

Every Japanese person clearly eats like Goku.

Like that one movie about that girl who became a princess because for some reason and always said ''shut up'' or not another teenage movie's main girl.

While they do exist, vegetarians are in much lower numbers in Japan compared to the west. If you include fish, it's virtually impossible to get away from meat over there unless you exclusively cook all your own meals.

Coincidentally, this question was asked on Anime News Network only a day ago.

There are some, but they aren't very common. Most vegetarians in Japan eat that way because they are Buddhist and it is against their religion. I've seen at least a few jokes in anime about vegetarians since most Japanese people eat fish commonly and eat beef and pork as well but in smaller quantities (which is how people should be eating meat). There are even some groups in Japan who are almost vegan but still eat fish. If we pretend that fish are plants then probably a solid 10% of Japanese people are vegetarian.

No, Japan is not really friendly to vegans or vegetarians.

Of course, even vegans, but not so many as in the west and their diets are generally different. Most native Japanese people who are vegetarian probably studied abroad or something.

If you're a foreigner and don't know any Japanese then it's quite hard to know what's vegetarian and what's not, because fish flakes, pork fat, and gelatin can be used on otherwise vegetarian products/ dishes. You can at least say that there are some great vegetarian or usually-vegetarian dishes though, and because dairy isn't used too much, many vegetarian things are also vegan.
Stores with foreign imports, vegetarian speciality restaurants, indian restaurants, buddhist restaurants, pizza, just buying and cooking vegetables/ noodles/ rice, they're the safest options.

Being a pescatarian, or just not worrying about fish flakes, is a lot easier. Fish is more of a staple than other meats, and there are always fish options, or things with fish stock/ flakes.

Yes but it's hard for anyone who doesn't cook or isn't a monk (they get a vegan diet at the temple they work for) to be a vegan. Vegetarians that aren't lacto-oval or Pescatarian also have trouble in Japan unless they know how to cook.

If you look at the typical "feasts" in western cartoons, it's usually filled with meat too so it's not really the way to draw any conclusion.

That said, it is true that Japan, overall, doesn't have a lot of vegetarian/vegan friendly options. They exist, but you need to look for them harder. Unless, as some have mentioned, you do a temple stay - in which case all the meals are vegetarian only - yet surprisingly filling when I tried it once (it tasted good too).

On the flip side, I actually think that they usually consume less meat than the West due to smaller portions in general. Aside from buffet style meal, and a few places trying to make a name by offering very big dishes, most of the places serve portions smaller than you'd find in the West (especially the US), and supermarket stuff tend to be more expensive than many countries, leading again to smaller portions.

Honestly, my Japanese relatives eat so much fish, and consume way too much sashimi, there's no way I could ever imagine them ever being vegetarian anytime soon.

But I guess other than that, yeah, most of them eat a lot of veggies and rice. They don't eat meat a lot, but that's mostly because meat is very expensive over there, not for health reasons. But of course if you go over to Tokyo, it's meat galore, since it's so westernized.

It's mostly rice, poultry, seafood and veggies in Japan. Beef and pork are delicacy because land for raising them is limited.
