Currently, dates on most of the site are written in full numeric format in the american way, and it causes unnecessary confusion for way too many people. There's a setting to get a dd/mm/yyyy date format on the lists but I don't think it's nearly as useful as it could be as it just enforces the format on the owner list for every visitor, wether they like it or not. I think it should be used as a personnal setting for the whole site.

Or there's an alternate solution, getting ride of the whole confusion issue altogether with an unambiguous format. Like months in letters or the international format (yyyy/mm/dd).

Oh, and since it's a quite similar topic, what about a choice between 12-hour and 24-hour clock?

I asked about a 24h clock a while back, Xinil said maybe in the distant future. I'd also like to see a global date override offering all three standards (mm/dd/yyyy, dd/mm/yyyy, yyyy/mm/dd.) as the american date system can be very confusing.

Another vote for this. A user seeing a post date of "04-05-07" has no clue whether it's May 4th or April 5th (US/EU), but can only try to guess by finding out the country of origin/audience target of the website or looking for other posts with either a day or month higher than 12.

yyyy/mm/dd should be used instead. Using a US format in a website for users from anywhere in the world makes no sense (in general for any website, not just about MAL)

As a British user, I too would like to see yyyy/mm/dd used site wide... Either that, or 12 Jan 2009 format dates. US date formats are really confusing for anyone other than Americans.

xx-xx-xx dates are confusing, period.

What date is 03-05-10 for instance? Some people write the year first, others the month and still others the day.

21 January 2009 removes all doubt and a 24 hour clock is just so much nicer :)

you can always over ride the list setting, though it makes it kinda blah... but it is uniform then with no confusion, sorry to those who put so much effort into customizing their lists, but then again its just another option for those who wish to implement it

Doesn't matter to me all that much (given that I live in the US), but I'd like to see a uniform date format for everyone so we can give this a rest.
